Norway August 2019: Market down -16.4% despite Tesla (+325.8%) and Jaguar (+371.7%)

Tesla and Jaguar both swim upstream in a declining market.

The Norwegian new car market slides down -16.4% year-on-year in August to 12.073 units, tilting the year-to-date tally into negative at -1.4% and 99.460 registrations. Volkswagen (-11.1%) and Toyota (-10.3%) manage to lose a little less ground than the market to remain atop the brands ranking, while Skoda (-16.4%) is up 4 spots on June to #3 and Tesla (+325.6%) up 5 to #4. BMW (-18.7%) rounds up the Top 5, with Mitsubishi (+33.8%), Volvo (+23.4%) and Hyundai (+6.3%) also posting excellent scores in the remainder of the Top 10. Jaguar (+371.7%), Suzuki (+16.4%) and Citroen (+7%) also impress further down.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (+12.2%) repeats at #1, topping the Norwegian charts for the 6th time this year, but it’s the Tesla Model 3, up 4 ranks on July to #2, that easily stays on top YTD. The Nissan Leaf (-55.8%) is knocked down to #3 ahead of the Toyota RAV4 (+39.6%) in excellent shape thanks to the new generation. The Audi e-Tron is down two spots on July to a still outstanding 5th place, with the Volvo V60 (+182%), Mitsubishi Outlander (+72.8%) and Volvo XC60 (+31.4%) posting excellent scores further down. Among the other new launches, the Jaguar i-Pace is up 6 ranks on last month to #11 and the Toyota Corolla is down 10 to #14.
