Switzerland July 2019: Mercedes (+34.7%), Toyota (+39.2%) lift market up 0.1%

The Mercedes EQC has landed in Switzerland.

New car sales in Switzerland edge up 0.1% year-on-year in July to 25.518 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down just -0.4% to 182.654. 4×4 sales gain 1% to 12.548 and a whopping 49.2% share vs. 48.7% year-to-date and are up 3.3% YTD to 91.790 and 50.3% share vs. 48.5%. Diesel registrations on the other hand dive -15% to 6.519 and 25.5% share vs. 30.1% and are down -11.7% YTD to 49.330 and 27% vs. 30.5%, but alternatively fuelled vehicles see their deliveries rise 97.7% to 3.029 and 11.9% share vs. 6% in July 2018, and are up 72.2% YTD to 19.729 and 10.8% vs. 6.2% over the same period in 2018.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-8.1%) plunges but still scores a higher share than YTD at 11.8% vs. 11.4%, followed by BMW (+3.9%) and Mercedes (+34.7%) posting the largest gain in the Top 7. Toyota (+39.2%) and Skoda (+12.7%) also shine in the Top 10 whereas Renault (-13.5%), Dacia (-7.3%), Ford (-1.5%) and Audi (-0.1%) recede, albeit at #10, Dacia manages to snap its 2nd Top 10 finish of the year after January (#10). Tesla (+654.8%), Jaguar (+57.9%), Land Rover (+54.7%), Lexus (+26.6%), Mazda (+27.4%), Gerrari (+23.7%) and Jeep (+23.5%) shine further down.

Model-wise, the VW Tiguan (-5.2%) reclaims the top spot for the 4th time in the past 13 months but remains #2 YTD below the Skoda Octavia (+12.9%) just as the VW Golf (-26%) implodes at #3. The Mercedes A-Class (+79.8%), C-Class (+41.2%) and Ford Fiesta (+21.7%) post the largest upticks in the Top 10, with the Aud Q3 (+113%), Ford Focus (+110.2%), Skoda Karoq (+106.5%), Seat Ateca (+53%), Skoda Kodiaq (+35.1%), BMW 2 Series (+34.8%) and Volvo XC40 (+34.7%) making themselves noticed further down. The Toyota Corolla (#32) is the best-selling new launch above the Tesla Model 3 (#44) and VW T-Cross (#55), the Mercedes EQC launches at #179.
