China New Energy July 2019: Toyota, Honda, Lexus top market exceptionally down (-6.1%)

The Toyota Alphard Hybrid has landed in China.

After soaring 184.8% to an all-time record 211.378 unit volume in June, sales of New Energy vehicles (or electrified vehicles) were expected to be less spectacular in July but a downright year-on-year drop (-6.1%) is certainly not what carmakers bargained for. The year-to-date tally remains however generously in positive at +84.1% to 799.328. In these New Energy updates we are referring to retail sales including imports as these offer a much more complete picture of New Energy sales than wholesales alone. Enjoying strong hybrid registrations, Toyota (+21.2%), Honda (+251.1%) and Lexus (+58.8%) storm the brands ranking this month, relegating BAIC BJEV (+41.1%) and BYD (-61.3%) to the Top 5’s tail end. Baojun (+476.8%) and GAC NE (+59%) shine, as do BMW (+61.8%), Tesla (+50.2%) and Volkswagen (+2427.3%) to close the Top 10, with new brand Ora lurking just behind at #11.

Model-wise, if the BAIC BJEV EU-Series (+390.7%) brilliantly holds onto the top spot – albeit for just 20 sales, the rest of the ranking is radically different,  with the Toyota Levin Hybrid (+36.2%), Corolla Hybrid (-46.2%) and Honda Accord Hybid (+732.5%) in tow while the Toyota Avalon Hybrid lands directly at #5 with just under 3.500 retail sales. The Baojun E100 (+407.2%) and Lexus ES Hybrid (+852.3%) follow, with the new Honda Odyssey Hybrid up 26 spots on June to #8. The GAC NE Aion S is up 40 ranks to #11 and the Toyota Alphard Hybrid lands directly at #14 for its first month in market.
