Czech Republic June 2019: Skoda Karoq climbs on podium in market down -15.5%

The Skoda Karoq signs its first ever podium finish at home.

It’s a 10th consecutive month of year-on-year drops in June in the Czech Republic at a harsh -15.5% to just 21.902 units, leading to a First Half tally down -10.6% to 128.498. Homegrown brand leader Skoda (-13.6%) evolves roughly like the market and hits 33.3% share, exactly 1 new car sold out of 3. Hyundai (-9.9%) is up two spots to a splendid 2nd place at 8.3% share, dislodging Dacia (-7.5%) with Volkswagen (-35.8%) in total perdition at #4. Toyota (+22.3%) simply posts the largest gain of all mass market brands at #6, with BMW (+2.8%), Mazda (+2.4%), Peugeot (+0.2%) the only other gainers while among smaller brands DS (+240%), Bentley (+50%) and Lada (+25%) make themselves noticed.

Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (-27.2%) remains in the lead despite a devastating loss, keeping the Skoda Fabia (-10.9%) at bay while the Skoda Karoq (+40.6%) climbs onto the Czech podium for the very first time after 4 consecutive months at #4. It eclipses the Skoda Rapid (-35.9%) now nearing the end of its life just as its posher replacement, the Skoda Scala, edges up one spot on last month to a new record #8. The Dacia Duster (-4.6%) is once again the best-selling foreign nameplate in the country, up one spot on May to #5 ahead of the Hyundai i30 (-6.2%) while the Skoda Kodiaq (-13.3%) is down two to #7. The Kia Cee’d (+20.3%) and Hyundai ix20 (+16.4%) round up the Top 10, both in excellent shape.
