Czech Republic May 2019: Dacia (+16.6%) up to #2 for the first time, Skoda Scala #9 in 9th consecutive market drop (-6.4%)

The Skoda Scala is inside the Czech Top 10 again.

Czech new car registrations fall for the 9th straight month in May at -6.4% to 24.059 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -9.5% to 106.596. Yet the Top 2 most popular brands post increases this month: homegrown Skoda (+4.4%) is up to 34.9% share while Dacia stuns with a 16.6% year-on-year lift to 7.1%, reaching the #2 brands spot for the first time in history, a little over a year after cracking the Czech podium for the first time in February 2018. Toyota (+12.2%), Renault (+11.3%), Mercedes (+5.2%), Peugeot (+3.8%) and Kia (+0.9%) are also up in the Top 10 but Volkswagen (-35.5%), Ford (-30.3%) and Hyundai (-14.2%) weight the entire market down.

Model-wise, the Top 5 is 100% Skoda as it is also the case YTD with the Octavia (-7.9%) resisting on top and followed by the Fabia (+13.8%), Rapid (-32.9%) Karoq (+76.9%) breaking its volume record at 1.070 and the Kodiaq (+18.5%). Like last month, the Dacia Duster (+56.1%) is the most popular foreign nameplate in the Czech Republic followed by the Hyundai i30 (-24.5%) and Renault Clio (+64.9%). The Skoda Scala is up 9 spots on April to lodge a 2nd Top 10 finish in its first 3 months on sale, lifting its ranking record to #9. The Toyota RAV4 (+187.7%), Kia Rio (+124.5%), Mazda CX-3 (+84.6%), Toyota Corolla (+68.6%), VW T-Roc (+55.7%) and Peugeot 3008 (+52.4%) also impress in the Top 50.
