Turkey February 2019: Fiat Egea (+39.2%) hits record share in market down 47.1%

The Fiat Egea hits a record 10.6% share in February.

No improvement in sight for the Turkish new car market, with February sales continue to freefall at -47.1% to 24.875 including light commercials, after a -59% drop in January, meaning the year-to-date tally is now down 52.2% to 39.248. Thanks to the second smallest year-on-year decline in the Top 20, Fiat (-26.9%) takes control of the brands ranking both this month and year-to-date (-38%), overtaking last year’s leader Renault (-53.3%). Volkswagen (-45.4%) overtakes Ford (-47.9%) to step onto the podium as it was the case over the Full Year 2018. Hyundai (-45.1%) remains in 5th place, while Toyota (-41.9%) is up 8 spots on January to #6 and Mercedes (-38.5%) is up 4 to #7. Dacia (-38.6%), Honda (-40.9%) and Peugeot (-44.7%) also manage to outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, Volvo (-25.5%) posts the smallest skid in the Top 20 at #19, but we have to wait until #21 to see the market’s first year-on-year gain by Jeep (+1.9%). Subaru (+23.6%), Alfa Romeo (+14.3%), Lexus (+100%), Maserati (+100%) and Ferrari (+100%) are the only other brands managing a gain this month, with Jaguar (-10%) and Suzuki (-12.3%) also scoring very slim drops.

Model-wise, the Fiat Egea (+39.2%) completely ignores the surrounding gloom to climb up to a spectacular 10.6% market share, a new record eclipsing its previous best of 10.4% established just last December. It is the only nameplate in the Top 12 managing an actual year-on-year gain. The Renault Clio (-31.6%) and Megane (-59.8%) complete the podium ahead of the Ford Transit (-48%) and Honda Civic (-40.6%), while the Mercedes C-Class (-12.2%), Ford Transit/Tourneo Courier (-27.8%) and Toyota Corolla (-28.6%) manage to contain their fall further down. At #13, the Hyundai Tucson (+18.6%) is the 2nd best-ranked gainer for the month, joined by the VW Tiguan (+5.4%) at #16, the Mercedes Sprinter (+32.2%) at #25 and the Kia Sportage (+27.9%) at #28. The VW T-Roc (#48) makes its very first appearance in the Turkish ranking, instantly becoming the most popular recent launch (<12 months) ahead of the Hyundai Kona (#50), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (#68) and Peugeot Rifter (#76).
