Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the world’s least explored nations culturally and geographically. It occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea north of Australia, with the western half forming the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. PNG is home to 8.1 million inhabitants, most of them living in customary communities which are as diverse as the 848 languages listed for the country. PNG is one of the most rural countries in the world, with only 18% of the population living in urban centres, and one-third of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day.

The PNG new car market continues to decline at – 12.6% in 2018 to just 4.868 registrations to be compared with 8.305 in 2014. Toyota (-15.4%) maintains its stranglehold on the market even though it slides below the symbolic 50% share mark this year at 49.8%. Isuzu (-8%) improves to 16.7% while Nissan (+2.3%) is the only Top 5 carmaker to register an uptick leading to a 9.3% share at #3. Ford (-21.8%) and Hyundai (-18.8%) are in difficulty. Further down, Kenworth (+107.7%), JMC (+51.3%), Mitsubishi (+16.3%) and Mazda (+2.2%) also lodge positive results. Model-wise, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 (-27.1%) remains comfortably in the lead, selling more than any brand in market bar Toyota and this despite a hefty drop. The Coaster (-11.7%) overtakes the Hiace (-29.3%) with the Hilux (-10.7%) falling slightly slower than the market.
