Mexico February 2019: Suzuki (+35.3%), Mazda (+15.7%) soar, Kia breaks share record in market back down

The Ertiga helps Suzuki sales surge 35.3% in Mexico this month.

After a freak gain last month prompted by a readjustment of Chevrolet sales, the Mexican new light vehicle market returns to the decline that has characterised it for the past 1.5 years with February down -5.5% to 103.692 units leading to a year-to-date volume down -1.9% to 214.917. For the 13th consecutive month, brands leader Nissan (-10.1%) falls faster than the market but remains comfortably in the lead at 21.9% share vs. just 13.7% for Chevrolet (-3.7%) now back to “normal”. Volkswagen (-6.8%) fares the worst in the Top 7, ahead of Toyota (stable) while Kia (+1.2%) breaks its share record at 7.4%. At #7 and #9, Mazda (+15.7%) and Suzuki (+35.3%) are the only Top 20 carmakers posting a double-0digit year-on-year gain alongside Peugeot (+17.1%) at #20. Below, Jaguar (+77.8%), Land Rover (+64.9%), Volvo (+39%), Cadillac (+33.8%), Lamborghini (+33.3%), Acura (+30.2%) and Chrysler (+28.6%) also impress.

Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (-3.8%) holds onto the pole position with 6.9% of the market, well above the Chevrolet Beat (+0.6%), Aveo (-2.3%) and Nissan Pickup (-14.2%) while the Nissan March gains 7.3% to round out the Top 5. The Mazda3 (+35.4%) is the best performer in the Top 10 with the Kia Rio (+5.8%) also strong. Further down, the Toyota RAV4 (+235.7%), VW Polo (+51.2%), Chevrolet Cavalier (+49.6%), VW Gol (+26.6%), Ram 1500-3500 (+25.3%) and Kia Forte (+18.1%) shine. The Renault Oroch (#47) is the best-selling newcomer (<12 months) above the Seat Arona (#60), Suzuki Ertiga (#66), Kia Sedona (#88) and BAIC D20 (#95).
