Ecuador Full Year 2018: Chevrolet Sail takes lead, Chinese at 14.3% share in market up 31%

The Great Wall Haval M4 ends 2018 just outride the Ecuadorian Top 10.

It’s a fantastic year for new vehicles sales in Ecuador at +31% year-on-year to 137.615 units, the 2nd largest annual volume in history below 2011 (139.893). The last couple of years have seen quite a dramatic shift in the country of origin or cars sold in Ecuador: from 49.9% locally made in 2016 to just 26.8% in 2018, South Korea dropping from 15.9% to 13.6% but China surging from 5.2% to 13.5%, up 47.3% on 2017. Colombia-sourced cars are up from 6.9% share two years ago to 11.4% and Mexico up from 3.1% to 9.5% but Japan down from 7.7% to 6.2%.

Chevrolet (+11%) remains dominant but sees its share thaw by six percentage points from 39.1% to 33.1%, with Kia (+27%) also trailing the market to hit 16.8% share vs. 17.3% in 2017. Hyundai (+43.7%) on the other hand improves to 9.9%, distancing Great Wall (+23.4%) remaining at an outstanding 4th place overall above Toyota (+65.4%) and Nissan (+39.3%). As mentioned above, the Chinese push ahead this year in Ecuador, lifted by excellent performances by JAC (+255.1%) and Chery (+106.3%) both breaking into the Top 10, as well as Changan (+10150%), Soueast (+792.1%), JMC (+294.9%), Foton (+172.5%), Dongfeng (+55.2%), FAW (+43.8%) and Zotye (+41.1%). Peugeot (+180.2%), Skoda (+85.5%) and BMW (+73.6%) also impress.

Model-wise, the Chevrolet Sail (+44.2%) takes the lead above the Kia Rio (+82.7%), both overstepping past the Chevrolet Aveo Family (+5.2%), with the Kia Picanto (+39.5%) and Sportage R (+24.9%) rounding up the Top 5 like last year. The Chevrolet Spark GT (+28.1%) follows while the Chevrolet D-Max (-1.9%) posts the only year-on-year decline in the Top 10. We welcome three new SUVs inside the Ecuadorian Top 10 this year: the Hyundai Creta (+94.9%), Chevrolet S-Cross (+88.7%) which is a Suzuki rebadge and the Hyundai Tucson (+87.5%). The Great Wall Haval M4 (#11), Wingle 5 (#13), JAC HFC and Chery Tiggo 2 lead the Chinese charge.
