Poland January 2019: Dacia, Volkswagen, Mazda impress, sales edge up 0.5%

Polish VW Tiguan sales soar 108.7% year-on-year in January.

The Polish new car market edges up 0.5% year-on-year in January to 51.308 registrations including light commercial vehicles. 33.405 units were purchased by companies (65.1% share) and only 17.903 (34.9%) by private buyers. Skoda (-8%) markedly under-performs but holds onto the brands lead with a strong 12.5% share vs. 11.7% over the FY2018. Volkswagen soars 26.2% to 11.6% share vs. 10.4%, while Toyota (-9.2%) struggles on the third step of the podium. Dacia (+43%) is the outright best performer in the Top 15, with Kia (+9.1%), Hyundai (+6.1%) and Mercedes (+4.3%) also dynamic and Mazda and BMW making their way into the Top 15 for the month.

Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (+2.6%) reclaims the top spot off the Toyota Yaris (-2.6%) after a surprise win by the latter in December. The Skoda Fabia (-31.8%) suffers from the competition of a heavily discounted Skoda Rapid (+8.6%) ahead of the Scala launch by the VW Tiguan (+108.7%), Hyundai Tucson (+20.3%), Fiat Tipo (+13.4%), Ford Focus (+11.5%) and VW Golf (+10.9%) all post very solid scores in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, the Mazda CX-3 (+61.8%), Dacia Sandero (+61.2%), Kia Sportage (+25.6%) and Toyota C-HR (+23%) shine while the VW Polo (#17), Dacia Lodgy (#29), Dokker (#30), VW Transporter (#32) and Mazda6 (#36) rank way above their FY2018 levels.
