Romanian new car sales are on a roll: 2018 marks the 5th consecutive year of double-digit gains and the largest of the lot at +24.6% to 130.919 units, after +22% in 2014, +16% in 2015, +17% to 2016 and +11% in 2017. This is the largest annual volume this decade and since the 147.962 sales of 2009, yet we remain far off the market’s all-time high of 343,080 registrations hit in 2008. Homegrown leader Dacia (+23%) almost matches the market at a commanding 28.2% share, far above Skoda (+27.6%) and Renault (+37.9%) both outpacing the market to improve to 8.5% and 8.1% respectively. In contrast Volkswagen (+7.5%) and Ford (+20.4%) drop down the ladder, while Peugeot (+57.9%), Nissan (+51.5%), Hyundai (+48%), Suzuki (+36.4%), Toyota (+35.8%) and Opel (+31.3%) all improve their share in the remainder of the Top 12. Further down, Ssangyong (+376.9%), Smart (+202.9%), Jeep (+124.4%), Mitsubishi (+72.9%), Mini (+65.2%), Alfa Romeo (+62.9%), Citroen (+58.9%), Volvo (+54.4%), Honda (+53.5%) and Jaguar (+44.1%) are among the best performers.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (+18.5%) is the clear best-seller at home for the 14th straight year, extending its streak of consecutive months at #1 to 172 with no interruption since its launch in September 2004, however seeing its share thaw further to 15.6%, its lowest on a full year. The Dacia Duster (+28%) and Sandero (+48%) make the podium 100% Dacia for the second year in a row, and ever. The Skoda Octavia (+18.4%) remains the most popular foreigner in Romania, distancing the Renault Clio (+52.1%), Megane (+31.7%) and Ford Focus (+5%). The Nissan Qashqai (+72%) soars up 11 spots to #12, the Ford Ecosport (+975.6%) improves its sales 10-fold to land at #14, peaking at #6 in September and December, with the Opel Crossland X (+1014.3%), Toyota C-HR (+204.5%), Citroen C3 (+145.7%), Peugeot 3008 (+121.4%) and Hyundai i30 (+106.2%) also standing out.
