The Mexican new light vehicle market has now been losing ground year-on-year for 13 consecutive months with June deliveries down another 6% to 119.724, pulling the year-to-date tally down 8.4% to 680.765. Atop the brands ranking, both Nissan (-16%) and Volkswagen (-27%) fall a lot faster than the market whereas Chevrolet (+2%) and most impressively Toyota (+11%) go against the grain with year-on-year gains. At the tail end of the Top 10, Hyundai once again has a smile on its face with a 17% surge, along with Mazda (+3%) the only other carmaker in positive. Dodge (-20%) on the other hand is hit hard. Further down, Land Rover (+214%), Jaguar (+136%), Isuzu (+107%), Mitsubishi (+71%), Lincoln (+70%), Volvo (+70%), Lamborghini (+50%), Smart (+32%), BMW (+28%), Suzuki (+20%), Mercedes (+19%) and Jeep (+17%) all defy market conditions with spectacular gains.

Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (-15%) holds onto the top spot with an estimated 6.2% share despite a steep drop, it distances the Chevrolet Aveo (+22%) and Beat (+1748%) celebrating one year in market. The Nissan Pickup (-7%) is stuck at #4 vs. #2 YTD. The VW Vento (-1%) remains above the Nissan March (-3%) while the VW Jetta (-46%) implodes, the Kia Rio (-1%) maintains itself inside the Top 10 and the Toyota Yaris (+20%) breaks into it for the first time in 2018. Excellent performances of the Mazda2 (+739%), VW Tiguan (+182%), Toyota Prius (+83%), Chevrolet Silverado (+37%), Honda HR-V (+33%), Ford F-Series (+33%), Kia Forte (+29%) and Renault Duster (+19%) in the remainder of the Top 50. The Chevrolet Cavalier (#15) tops recent launches (<12 months) ahead of the Hyundai Accent (#35), Honda BR-V (#53) and Toyota C-HR (#73).

But the big story in Mexico this month is elsewhere, with BAIC becoming the first Chinese manufacturer to ever appear in the Mexican sales charts. Two years after establishing itself in the country (June 2016), and over one year after starting final assembly in Puente Nacional, Veracruz (May 2017) in association with AT Motors with an annual capacity of 6.000 vehicles, BAIC indeed finally appears in the ranking, landing directly at the Top 25’s door. It had failed to officially communicate sales data until now, although in May 2018 an article from the Mexico News Daily claimed the brand had sold 750 cars in Mexico over the first 4 months of 2018 vs. 186 a year prior. It was also announced that BAIC would shortly be investing $2 billion in a new Mexican factory, as it currently pays a 21% import tariff on all its cars because none of the manufacturing process is completed in Mexico right now, only CKD assembling. Local nameplates account for 90% of the brand’s June sales, with the D20 representing 49% and the X25 crossover 41%. The BJ40 jeep (6%) and X65 crossover (4%) are imported.
