New car sales in Taiwan edge up 1% year-on-year in May to 35.686 units, meaning the year-to-date volume is up 4.1% to  184.305. There are some pretty momentous shifts at play in the market this month: both brand leader Toyota (-16%) and Nissan (-14%) are hit hard whereas Honda soars 42% to 10.3% share vs. 9.1% so far in 2018. Mercedes (+22%) and Lexus (+64%) also impress among luxury carmakers just as Ford (-36%) freefalls. Mitsubishi/CMC (+5%), Mazda (-2%), Volkswagen (-3%) and BMW (-9%) post more muted results in the Top 10. But the big surprise comes in the models ranking where the Toyota Corolla (-45%) is toppled from its throne for the first time in almost 5 years (since September 2013 when the Nissan Tiida ranked 1st). The best-seller this month is the Honda CR-V thanks to deliveries up 4-fold (+319%) on the previous generation a year ago. The Sienta (+33%), RAV4 (-24%) and Yaris (+20%) make it 4 Toyotas in the Top 5. Up 38% to #8, the Mercedes C-Class reaches its highest ranking since we started following Taiwan monthly in November 2010 and only its second Top 10 finish after August 2014 (#10).
