The Austrian new car market is up 5.4% year-on-year in April to 31.821 registrations, lifting the YTD volume up 3% to 122.295 units. Brand leaders Volkswagen (+6%) and Skoda (+4%) roughly follow the market but it’s Seat that scores the most impressive gain in the Top 10 at +66% to 6.8% share in third place, making the podium 100% VW Group for the second month running and also YTD. Mazda (+65%) also stuns at #9 whereas Renault (-18%) and BMW (-11%) struggle. Further down, notice also Jeep (+72%), Subaru (+70%), Lexus (+51%), Toyota (+49%), Ssangyong (+42%), DS (+39%), Porsche (+35%), Mitsubishi (+32%), Lada (+27%) and Dacia (+17%) while Lamborghini shoots up 450% and Ferrari lurches 57% to 11 sales each.

Historical event in the Austrian models ranking: Volkswagen manages to place 5 nameplates in the Top 5: the Golf (-23%) is in the lead above the Bus aka Transporter (+70%) as it catches up on a diesel sales ban at the start of the year like in Germany and Switzerland, the Tiguan (-16%), Polo (-21%) and T-Roc breaking into any country’s Top 5 for the very first time. This is the second time Volkswagen manages such a feat in Austria – and any country in the world – after monopolising the Top 6 back in December 2012. Previous notable performances include 5 VW nameplates in the Top 6 in February 2016 and 6 VW nameplates in the Top 10 in December 2013.

The VW Group also manages an Austrian first: monopolising the Top 9 with the Skoda Octavia (-18%), Fabia (-6%), Seat Ibiza (+34%) and Leon (+64%) in tow. According to BSCB records this is the first time the VW Group has the 9 best-selling nameplates in any month and any market in the world. Only the Ford Focus (+70%) manages to snap a Top 10 placing this month. The Seat Ateca (+45%), Mazda2 (+159%), CX-5 (+138%) and Dacia Duster (+65%) also shine while the Skoda Karoq (#13), Seat Arona (#16), Opel Crossland X (#24), Jeep Compass (#48), Kia Stonic (#54) and Opel Grandland X (#55) top recent launches (<12 months).
