Peru Full Year 2017: Toyota Yaris, Hilux and Kia Rio top market up 6%

The Peruvian new car market is up 6% year-on-year in 2017 to 180.281 units vs. 170.020 a year ago according to the Asociación Automotriz de Perú (AAP). Of these, 163.668 are light vehicles (+6.4%) meaning passenger cars, pickups, vans and SUVs. The largest departments are Lima (110.853, up 13.2%), Arequipa (14.349), Trujillo (7.965) and Cusco (7.142). Toyota remains the most popular carmaker in the country, outpacing the market with sales up 8% to 16.5% share, followed closely by Hyundai also up 8% to 15.2%. Kia on the other hand drops 3% to 11.4% but still sells almost double that of its nearest followers, Chevrolet (5.8%) and Suzuki (5.6%) both overtaking Nissan (-23%). Mitsubishi (+26%) and Volkswagen (+16%) are the other two Top 10 carmakers to post double-digit year-on-year gains.

Model-wise, the Toyota Yaris retains its overall crown for the 5th year in a row but the photo-finish is extremely close: after 11 months (latest data available), the Yaris add a meagre 99 unit-advantage over the Toyota Hilux and 110 unit-gap over the 2nd best-selling passenger car, the Kia Rio. In 4th place comes the Hyundai Accent, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Kia Picanto. The Toyota RAV4 is king of SUVs, toppling the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage which were on top two years ago while the all-new Hyundai Creta lands at #4 and the Renault Duster breaks into the Top 5. The Toyota Hilux obliterates the pickup market, selling 4.7 times as much as the #2, the Nissan NP300, and 5.8 times the Mitsubishi L200 at #3.
