New car wholesales shoot up 11.2% year-on-year in Indonesia in January to 95.892 units. Traditional brand leader Toyota has a weak month at 26.5% share vs. 34.4% over the Full Year 2017. Daihatsu on the other hand is 2.3 percentage points above its FY17 level in 2nd place and 19.6% share but the best performer atop the brands ranking is Mitsubishi up from 11.2% and #4 in FY17 to a splendid 18.5% and third place in January, overtaking Honda particularly weak at 14.2% vs. 17.3% in FY17. Suzuki is also strong at 12% share vs. 10.3% in FY17 in 5th place. Below, Chinese carmaker and recently local producer Wuling cracks the 1% share and now threatens Nissan and Datsun (both at 1.2%) for the 8th place overall.

The new generation propels the Toyota Rush into the Top 10.

Best-selling nameplate in the country for the past 12 consecutive years, the Toyota Avanza sees its market share tumble down to just 7.9% this month vs. 10.8% over FY2017. The big event is the 2nd place of the Mitsubishi Xpander like in December, but this time only 464 units below the Avanza. If the Xpander manages to outsell the Avanza even for just one month, this would be the first time a non-Toyota nameplate is #1 in Indonesia since BSCB started tracking this country in 2005, and potentially for the first time since Toyota’s entrance in Indonesia in 1976… Thanks to new generations, the Toyota Rush (#9) and its twin the Daihatsu Terios (#14) get a healthy boost in the sales charts, with the Suzuki Ignis making a reappearance inside the Top 20 for the first time since last July.
