Fourth consecutive year of double-digit gains for the Romanian new car market: after +22% in 2014, +16% in 2015 and +17% to 2016, sales go up 10.7% in 2017 to 105.083 units. This is the first six-digit annual score since the 147.962 sales of 2009. However we remain very far off the market’s all-time high of 343,080 registrations hit in 2008. Local hero Dacia posts a solid 9% year-on-year gain to end the year just below 30.000 units but that’s not quite matching the market, resulting in a lowered 28.5% share. Volkswagen (+12%) overtakes Skoda (+1%) to take 2nd spot overall while Ford (+18%) passes Renault (+12%) to #4. Opel (+16%), Mercedes (+11%), Hyundai (+16%) and Toyota (+21%) hold onto their position while Kia (+43%) breaks into the Top 10 followed by Suzuki (+46%). Alfa Romeo (+345%), Maserati (+76%), Ferrari (+75%), Lada (+67%), Seat (+42%), Bentley (+31%), Ssangyong (+30%), Citroen (+29%), and Nissan (+28%) also impress.

The first generation Dacia Duster ends its last year up 29%.

No surprise in the models ranking: the Dacia Logan celebrates 13 consecutive years at #1 and 160 consecutive months since its launch in September 2004, although with sales edging up just 2%, its annual market share is the lowest ever for the nameplate at 16.4%. The Dacia Duster shoots up 29% to 6.5% share as the new generation starts hitting dealerships at the very end of 2017 and the Dacia Sandero gains 17% to make the podium 100% Dacia for the first time in Romanian history. The Skoda Octavia celebrates ten consecutive years as Romania’s best-selling foreign model, up 2% but down one rank to #4. The Ford Focus (+17%) and Opel Astra (+14%) follow, with the Renault Megane up 3-fold (+178%) to #9 and the VW Golf up 10% and rounding up the Top 10. The Ford Kuga (+148%), Fiat Tipo (+133%), Kia Cee’d (+80%), Mercedes GLC (+54%), VW Polo (+38%), Opel Mokka (+37%), Kia Sportage (+36%) and VW Tiguan (+31%) also make themselves noticed in the Top 35.
