After freefalling 15% in 2016 as the tax cuts for low-emission vehicles were abandoned, the Dutch new car market rallies back up 8.4% in 2017 to 414.538 units. Volkswagen is the most popular carmaker in the country for an incredible 18th year in a row despite going against the grain with a 2% drop to 10.4% share, almost one percentage point below its 2016 level. Renault on the other hand doubles the market growth at +16% to hit 9.8% share, a comfortable distance above Opel (+7%) and Peugeot (+11%) in a Top 4 unchanged on last year. Toyota advances 30% to #5, the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 20, with Kia (+24%) and Ford (+11%) also posting double-digit progressions in the Top 10. Below, Jeep (+23%), Porsche (+23%), Suzuki (+28%), Bentley (+37%), Maserati (+53%), Tesla (+55%), Alfa Romeo (+72%) and Aston Martin (+182%) impress.

The Up helps Volkswagen achieve an 18th consecutive year atop the Dutch brands ranking.

Over in the models ranking, after missing out on the 2016 pole position for 50 meagre units, the Renault Clio achieves its first ever annual win in the Netherlands thanks to deliveries up 10% to 2.8% share. It is only the second Renault to top the Dutch year-end sales charts since 1982, after the Renault Megane did so in 2012. After being victorious in 2013, the VW Up! had fallen to #5 in 2016 but leaps up to 2nd place this year with sales up 26%. Reversely, the VW Golf (-7%) gets knocked from its 2016 pedestal down to #3. Outstanding performance of the Opel Karl up 8 spots and 32% to #4, with the Kia Picanto (+17%) also strong at #5.
