New Zealand November 2017: Hyundai Kona up to #12, annual record broken

Thanks to deliveries up another 6.2% year-on-year to a new November record at 14.594 registrations, the New Zealand car market breaks its annual volume record with one month left in the year at 148.360 units, up 9.3% on the same period in 2016 and eclipsing the previous annual record of 146.753 set just last year. This marks the fourth consecutive year that new car sales in New Zealand break a new annual record, and the second time in a row that the record is broken by end-November. Thanks to extremely robust rental sales once again, Toyota sails off with a 42% year-on-year surge to 22.1% share vs. 19.8% so far this year. Ford is more timid at +4% to 10.6%, whereas Holden drops 6% to 10.2%. Mazda (+13%) and Mitsubishi (+16%) round up the Top 5, both outpacing the market while Hyundai (-16%) and Nissan (-14%) markedly underperform. Land Rover (+24%), LDV (+27%), Foton (+28%), Peugeot (+28%), Subaru (+35%), Jaguar (+45%), Fiat (+64%) and Citroen (+107%) are among the best performers further down.
Over in the models ranking, the Ford Ranger reclaims the lead it holds year-to-date for the first time since last July thanks to sales up 12%, containing the efforts of the Toyota Corolla (+40%) of which 81% of sales have gone to rentals. The Toyota RAV4 (+177%) owes 62% of its September result to rentals while the Toyota Highlander (+324%) is 71% rentals. Notice also the Toyota Hilux up a very robust 28% but down to #3, while great performers also include the Mazda CX-5 (+46%), Mitsubishi Triton (+29%), ASX (+83% and 46% rentals) and Honda CR-V breaking into the Top 10 thanks to the new generation. But the event of the month is the first appearance in the New Zealand Top 30 of the all-new Hyundai Kona directly up to #12 and the brand’s best-seller here for the months. It outsells such blockbusters as the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson while two other newcomers make it to the November Top 30: the Ford Escape (#25) and Holden Astra (#26).
