The Swedish new car market is up 0.9% year-on-year in October to 32.112 units, a record for the month. The year-to-date tally is now up 2.9% to a record-breaking 311.951 registrations in ten months. Homegrown market leader Volvo goes against the grain with a 2% drop but post a 20.5% share well above its YTD level of 19.7%. Volkswagen is up 5% to 16.3% vs. 15.1% so far this year and Toyota leaps there spots on September and 16% year-on-year to 6.6%, overtaking Kia up 2% to 6.3%. Mercedes (+10%), Renault (+11%) and Skoda (+13%) are the other Top 10 carmakers posting a double-digit gain, whereas Audi (-15%) delivers a double-digit decline. Outside the Top 10, notice Fiat (+19%), Seat (+23%), Honda (+30%) and Alfa Romeo (+65%) all in great shape.

The Kia Niro ranks inside the Swedish Top 20 for the 2nd consecutive month.

Over in the models ranking, the Volvo XC60 remains the best-seller for the 4th consecutive month with sales up 25% to 7.2% share. Its sales are split between 1.314 previous generation (-29%) and 995 new generation, up 43% on September. These detailed figures courtesy of Nils from local publication ViBilagare. As you can see even though the previous generation had its production end in mid-September, it still outsells the new one, probably for the last time ever. Combining two generations has enabled the XC60 to snap the YTD lead at home, with the Volvo S/V90 coming in 2nd place but once again under-performing in October at just 5.1% share (+37%) vs. 5.7% year-to-date.

Excellent start for the Kia Stonic in Sweden.

The VW Golf is holding strong in 2nd place this month with 6.4% share, one percentage point above its 2017 level, while the VW Passat is up 8% at #4. Below the Volvo S/V60 (-18%) and V40 (-39%) both plummeting down, the VW Tiguan triples its sales year-on-year (+205%) at #7. The Toyota Yaris (+30%), Kia Optima (+128%), Kia Niro (+149%), Mercedes GLC (+76%) and Peugeot 3008 (+196%) also shine in the Top 30. The Skoda Kodiaq (#33) dominates recent launches just as the Kia Stonic gains 38 spots on its inaugural month in September to a cool 62nd place.
