The Thai new vehicle market is up 5.7% year-on-year in June to 69.798, leading to a First Half 2017 tally up a solid 11.2% to 409.980 units. Leader Toyota is in difficulty this month with sales plunging 16% on June 2016 to 25.6% share vs. 27.4% YTD. In contrast, Honda surges 29% to snap the 2nd spot off Isuzu at 18.5% share vs. 15% YTD while Isuzu is down 0.3% to 16% vs. 18.8% YTD. The next four manufacturers all frankly beat the market, posting double-digit gains: Mitsubishi is up 36%, Nissan up 37%, Ford up 18% and Mazda up 27%%, with Chevrolet up 18% in 9th place. Further down, notice Chinese MG continuing to climb higher at +36%, BMW up 25%, Hyundai up 28%, Dongfeng up 21% and Volkswagen up a staggering 880%.

The Isuzu D-Max now has a 12.000-sales advantage over the Toyota Hilux…

Model-wise, the Isuzu D-Max has now established itself as the uncontested market leader, having held the top spot five of the past six months including June when it commands a 12.8% share thanks to a limited 2% drop vs. 11.6% and -24% for the Toyota Hilux. Year-to-date, the D-Max has a 12.000 unit-advantage over the Hilux, compared to 7.000 a year ago when the HIlux manages to edge past the D-Max during the last days of the year, ending 2016 with a 400-unit advantage. However at the same time in 2016, the Hilux had already begun to catchup on the D-Max, ranking #1 both in May and June, and for the rest of the year. The situation is quite different this year, with the Hilux not able to snatch a convincing win: its only #1 ranking happened in February for just 114 units. This time it seems almost certain: the Hilux is about to lose its “home” market after 11 straight annual wins.

The Toyota Yaris dominates the passenger cars market, up one spot on May to land on the podium, knocking the Ford Ranger (+41%) down to #4. The Honda Jazz soars by a spectacular 71% year-on-year and 9 spots on May thanks to its facelift, landing in 5th place overall and 2nd best-selling passenger car. In fact, Honda places no less than four nameplates in side the June Thai Top 10 (Toyota has just two), along with the City (+26%), Civic (-18%) and CR-V up 8-fold thanks to the new generation. Other great performers include the Mitsubishi Triton up 32%, the Chevrolet Colorado up 29%, Mitsubishi Attrage up 50%, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport up 31%, Isuzu MU-X up 26%, Mitsubishi Mirage up 39% and Nissan March up 143%.
