The Spanish new car market is up 6.4% year-on-year in June to reach 132.261 registrations, the highest score for the month since 2007. This brings the year-to-date tally up 7.1% to 670.979, the highest H1 result since 2008. In June, private sales trail the market growth at +3.3% to 61.502 and 46.5% share vs. 47.9% a year ago whereas company sales shoot up 24.2% to 36.470 and 27.6% share vs. 23.6% a year ago. Rental sales are down 3.2% to 34.289 and 25.9% share vs. 28.5% in June 2016. Year-to-date, private sales edge up a meagre 2.2% to 315.093 and 47% share vs. 49.2% over the first half of 2016, company sales are up 14.5% to 180.155 and 26.8% share vs. 25.1% a year ago and rental sales are up 9% to 175.731 and 26.2% share vs. 25.7% a year ago. All in all, the key thing to remember about Spain is that a large part of this year’s growth comes from artificial channels while private sales lose share.

The Renault Captur shoots up from #15 in May to #5 in June in Spain.

The top of the Spanish brands ranking continues to be reshuffled each month: this time Renault takes a frank lead with sales up 5% to 9.3% share, enabling the brand to step up to 4th place year-to-date (it ranked #1 over the Full Year 2016). In 2nd place, Seat is up three spots on May and 19% year-on-year to 7.6% share, remaining #1 year-to-date with deliveries up 22%. Volkswagen (+0.5%), Peugeot (+5%) and Opel (-11%) follow, all losing market share vs. June 2016. Ford (+13%), Nissan (+18%) and Toyota (+39%) all shine inside the Top 10 while below, Mini (+25%), Volvo (+42%), Suzuki (+43%), Alfa Romeo (+58%) and Porsche (+75%) all post spectacular gains.

The Range Rover Velar makes its first appearance in the Spanish sales charts.

Over in the models ranking, the Seat Ibiza reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date despite sales down 8% year-on-year to 3.925 and 3% share. It distances the Seat Leon up 14% and still #2 year-to-date for a Seat 1-2. The VW Polo is knocked down one spot to #3, ahead of the Renault Clio (+12%) and Captur (+17%) both very dynamic. No other nameplate posts a double-digit gain inside the Top 10 with the Opel Corsa (-31%) faring the worst. Further down the ranking, the Ford Focus (+26%), Citroen C3 (+47%), Peugeot 2008 (+38%), Toyota Yaris (+37%) and Fiat Panda (+55%) impress. The Peugeot 3008 II (#24), Seat Ateca (#26) and Toyota C-HR (#30) dominate recent launches. The locally-produced Opel Crossland is up 121 spots on May to #79 and we welcome the Range Rover Velar at #231.
