The New Zealand new vehicle market cannot stop galloping ahead: up 17% year-on-year in June, it signs the highest monthly volume in history at 15.985, smashing the previous record of 14.709 set in October 2016. The year-to-date tally now stands at a record 79.229 units halfway through the year, up 15% on the same period in 2016. Motor Industry Association chief executive David Crawford attributed this exceptionally strong month to the 2017 Agricultural Fieldays held at the beginning of June as well as a healthy tourism market boosting rental sales. Passenger car and SUV deliveries are up 10.8% to 10.181 but it’s commercial vehicles (mainly pickup trucks) that lift the market up this month with a 29% surge in June to 5.804 and 23% year-to-date.

The Amarok helps Volkswagen up 36% year-on-year in NZ this month.

Brand leader Toyota manages to outpace the fast-growing market with a 24% year-on-year surge to 20.7% market share vs. 17.5% YTD, distancing Ford at 10.6 (+14%), Holden at 8.5% (+6%) and Mazda at 7.1% (+11%). Mitsubishi (+27%), Suzuki (+38%) and Volkswagen (+36%) post the largest gains inside the Top 10 while beyond, Isuzu (+20%), Subaru (+84%), Mercedes (+29%), BMW (+33%), LDV (+51%) and Jeep (+43%) are the most dynamic within the Top 20. Model-wise, the Ford Ranger is up 41% to smash its monthly volume record to 1.178 (pb 925 in July 2016), lifting its YTD lead over the Toyota Hilux to 911 units. The Holden Colorado soars 59% to make the podium 100% pickups in June – like last month – but also YTD. The Toyota Corolla is up 64% to #4, the Mitsubishi Triton up 42% to #5, the Mitsubishi Outlander up 61% to #9 and the VW Amarok makes an extremely rare appearance inside the NZ Top 20.
