Whereas all other large European markets record a year-on-year gain, German new car sales are down 3.5% in June to 327.693 registrations. The year-to-date tally remains however in positive halfway through the year at +3.1% to 1.787.026 units.  Strikingly, the Top 7 best-selling manufacturers all lodge a negative result this month. Leader Volkswagen falls faster than the market at -5% to 18.5% share, as is the case for Audi (-9%), Opel (-9%), BMW (-18%) and Ford (-9%). Mercedes (-1%) and Skoda (-3%) manage meagre share gains thanks to restrained declines. Renault (+22%) and Seat (+19%) are the heroes of the Top 10 while beyond, Toyota (+23%), Peugeot (+14%) and Mitsubishi (+32%) are the only other Top 20 carmakers able to post a double-digit gains this month. Improvements are more frequent among smaller brands, with Tesla (+46%), Lada (+82%), Lexus (+31%), Maserati (+45%), Chevrolet (+184%), Bentley (+54%), Aston Martin (+46%) and Lotus (+58%) all excelling, none selling more than 400 units however.

The Opel Crossland X is up to #70 in June.

Over in the models ranking, the VW Golf holds dearly onto the top spot but drops another 10% to 6.1% share. The VW Polo climbs up one spot on May and 17% on a year ago on the back of discounts on the outgoing generation and lands in 2nd place above the VW Passat (-7%) and Mercedes C-Class (-3%). One year after launch, the new generation still boosts VW Tiguan sales up 23% at #5. The Skoda Fabia is up three ranks on last month to #6, distancing the Opel Astra, down a surprisingly harsh 19% and the Skoda Octavia down 11% despite its recent facelift. The Seat Leon is down 1% year-on-year but climbs to #12. Just renewed, the Mercedes E-Class (+24%) and BMW 5 Series (+46%), now the brand’s best-seller, gain significant ground, just as the Mercedes GLC (+30%), Seat Ibiza (+83%) and Mitsubishi Space Star (+77%) also do. The Audi Q2 (#55) is the most popular recent launch ahead of the Opel Crossland X up 93 spots on May to #70, the Skoda Kodiaq (#81) and Toyota C-HR (#89).
