Czech Republic January 2017: VW rallies up 83% in record market
Czech Volkswagen sales are up 83% on a low January 2016 base.

After posting a third consecutive record year in 2016, the Czech new car market starts 2017 on an even more impressive note with sales up 18% to 20.818 for the biggest January score in history. Yet homegrown market leader Skoda drops 1% to 6.455 deliveries for a still very robust 31% share. Volkswagen recovers from a January 2016 hampered by its emissions scandal at +83% to 2.979 units and 14.3% share with Hyundai also beating the market at +27% to 1.491 and 7.2%. Ford (+11%) overtakes Dacia (+0.1%) while Mercedes stuns and gains one more spot on December to rank 6th with 707 sales. Toyota makes a come back into the Czech Top 10 at #7 with 3.3% share vs. #14 and 2.2% over the FY2016, Peugeot is up 22% to #8 while Kia is also up 22% but drops to #11. After ranking 4th in December, Renault tumbles down 10 spots to #14 this month.
The Dacia Dokker breaks into the Czech Top 10 for the very first time in January.
The Skoda Octavia continues to dominate its national ranking in spite of sales down 11% to 2.183 for a 10.5% market share vs. 10.9% over FY2016. The Skoda Fabia (-2%), Rapid (+15%) and Superb (+3%) make the Top 4 100% Skoda as it was the case for the first time in an annual ranking last year. The VW Golf (+146%) and Passat (+64%) become the two best-selling foreigners in the Czech Republic this month with the traditional leader, the Hyundai i30, relegated to 8th place and 2.5% share even though it gains 30% on January 2016. The Hyundai ix30 (+30%) and Dacia Dokker (+74%) round up the Top 10 with solid gains. The VW Tiguan (+151%), Touran (+191%), Nissan Qashqai (+85%), Hyundai Tucson (+57%) and VW Caddy (+181%) also impress in the Top 20 whereas the newly launched Skoda Kodiaq implodes from #12 in December to a paltry #84 with just 49 sales in January – hopefully for the brand just a launch blip.
