After a rollercoaster of a year, the Turkish new light vehicle market ends 2016 on a 1.6% gain to a record 983.720 registrations including Light Commercial Vehicles. After a first semester up 1.5%, political instability shot the market down 30% in July and 13% in August before the government cancelling a tax mainly aimed at taxis rallied the market back up 29% in October and 45% in November to edge past last year’s record. Volkswagen remains the most popular carmaker in the country in spite of deliveries down 3% to 13.7% share, while Renault gains 4% to 12.4%, overtaking Ford at 11.1% (-8%) with Fiat staying at #4 with 10.8% share (-4%). Opel shoots up 18% to #5, overtaking Toyota (+4%) and Hyundai (+0.04%). Outside the Top 10, Nissan is up 21%, Skoda up 31%, Seat up 22%, Honda up 26% and Land Rover up 34% but the most impressive comeback goes to Suzuki up 22-fold to 3.931 sales mainly thanks to the all-new Vitara accounting for 56% of the brand’s deliveries in Turkey this year.

Local producer Fiat resumes its domination of the models ranking with the Egea, the successor to the Linea and known as Tipo outside of Turkey. It is up 7-fold on 2015 (when it was on sale for just two months) to shoot up to pole position for its first full year of sales at 38.260 deliveries. In fact, were it not for last minute surges by the Renault Fluence (2014) and Toyota Corolla (2015), the Fiat Linea would have led the Turkish charts for four consecutive years since 2012, with this year being a simple and logical passing of relay. The Ford Courier gains 6% and one spot to #2, last year’s leader the Toyota Corolla drops 6% to #3 and the Opel Astra surges 30% and 6 ranks to #4 thanks to the new model. The VW Polo (+27%) and Renault Symbol (+6%) make their return inside the Top 10 while the Renault Mégane (+230%) is reborn thanks to the new sedan replacing the Fluence (-35%) and boosting the nameplate up to 4th place in December.
