The Norwegian new car market is up 2.6% in 2016 to 154.603 registrations. Volkswagen (+1%) and Toyota (+9%) remain the most popular carmakers in the country but luxury actors BMW (+26%) and Mercedes (+18%) follow and advance a lot faster. Volvo (-12%) struggles, as do Ford (-2%) and Nissan (-3%). Audi (+14%), Mitsubishi (+15%), Opel (+12%), Renault (+10%) and Hyundai (+11%) also post double-digit gains inside the Top 20. Thanks to very persuasive government incentives, the models ranking in Norway is very influenced by eco-friendly cars. Even though the VW Golf drops 20% on 2015 to 13.148 sales, it posts a 9th straight year at #1 and eco-friendly versions account for over half of its sales here this year: the e-Golf pure electric for 36% and the GTE plug-in hybrid for 33%.

In fact, all best-sellers are ranking this high in Norway solely because of their eco-friendly variants: 90% of the Mitsubishi Outlander up 44% to 2nd place are the PHEV, 97% of all Toyota RAV4 (+32% to #3) are hybrid, 53% of VW Passat (up 50% to #4) are plug-in hybrid, 97% of Toyota Auris and 95% of Toyota Yaris are hybrid. Then, the Nissan Leaf (+31%) ranks 7th and the BMW i3 surges 65% to #8, even ending 31 consecutive months of VW Golf reign to rank #1 overall in November. Further down, the VW Tiguan surges 124% to #10, the Tesla Model X lands at #34, the Hyundai Ioniq at #55 (but ranked inside the November Top 10) and the Kia Niro at #74.
