Donald Trump’s keenness to repeal the NAFTA agreement and his suggestion to tax Mexican car imports into the United States constitute a real threat to the Mexican car industry if ever implemented. But for now, Mexican new car sales continue to roar ahead with October up a further 15% year-on-year to 137.383 units, the highest ever October score in Mexico lifting the year-to-date tally up a mammoth 19% to 1.256.572. After just ten months’ worth of sales, this is already Mexico’s 2nd largest annual tally in history below just the 1.351.648 hit last year, a score that has now already been annihilated as we write these lines. As it has been the case for the past couple of years now, this month breaks a bunch of other records: it’s the largest non-December monthly score in history – December traditionally being pumped up with end-of-year deals, the 30th consecutive month of year-on-year gains, the 22nd consecutive monthly record and 15th consecutive month above 100.000 units.

Nissan remains the most popular brand despite seeing its market share thaw again compared to the same month last year at 25.9% due to a 10% gain slightly weaker than the market as a whole. Chevrolet on the other hand edges a little faster than the market at +17%, with Ford also over-performing at +28%. In the Top 6, Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda all gain 10%. The latest new entrant in the Mexican producers circle, Kia, extends its honeymoon with the local market with a 10th consecutive record month at 6.011 units, up 1.8% on September and 229% year-on-year. This figure includes 1.539 locally-produced Forte. Further down, Mini (+25%), BMW (+27%), Lincoln (+30%), Suzuki (+30%), Dodge (+32%), Hyundai (+34%) and Chrysler (+52%) all frankly beat the market whereas Audi (-4%), Mazda (-6%), Seat (-7%), Mitsubishi (-11%) and Jeep (-44%) are the only manufacturers losing ground inside the Top 20.

After being overtaken by the Chevrolet Aveo last month, the Nissan Versa reclaims the pole position it holds year-to-date thanks to 8.047 sales (+32%) adding up to 69.809 so far in 2016 (+41%). The VW Vento (+57%) and Nissan Pickup (+1%) complete the podium while the Chevrolet Spark (+55%), Nissan Sentra (+27%) and Chevrolet Sonic (+32%) shine inside the Top 10. Just below, the Chevrolet Trax more than doubles its sales year-on-year )(102%), the Ford Figo posts another solid score at #12, the Dodge Attitude soars 55% and the Nissan Frontier is up 49%. The Kia Rio (#25) leads recent launches (<12 months) ahead of the Mazda CX-3 (#35), Nissan Kicks up 15 spots on September (#37), Dodge Neon (#70), Kia Soul (#71) and Hyundai Creta (#78). Finally, the Infiniti QX30 (#210), Chrysler Pacifica (#225) and Fiat 124 Spider (#232) make their first appearance in the Mexican charts.
