The German new car market is down 6% year-on-year in October to 262.724 units on less selling days, yet the year-to-date tally remains frankly in positive territory at 2.818.507 registrations, up 5% or 132.000 sales over the same period in 2015. Despite a harsh 20% decline, Volkswagen remains by far the market leader at home with 49.441 sales and 18.8% share, distancing Mercedes at 9.5% (-2%), Audi at 8.9% (-3%) and BMW at 7.8% (-3%). Below, Opel, Ford, Skoda, Renault, Hyundai and Seat make the Top 10 exactly in the same order as year-to-date. Double-digit+ gainers are rare and include Toyota, Peugeot, Land Rover (all at +12%), Jaguar (+116%), DS (+11%), Alfa Romeo (+79%), Lexus (+61%), Maserati (+36%) and Infiniti (+61%).

Over in the models ranking, Volkswagen defies the odds and manages to monopolise the Top 4 for only the fifth time in history after January 2014February 2014, May 2015 and October 2015. The Golf is tops again but freefalls 36% as potential buyers await the nameplate’s facelift, the Tiguan is up 16%, the Passat down 33% and the Polo down 8%. The Opel Astra surges 44% year-on-year to land in 5th place, with other great gainers including the Ford Fiesta (+37%), VW Touran (+41%), VW Transporter (+26%), VW Caddy (+29%) and BMW X1 (+105%). Among recent launches, the Hyundai Tucson (#41) keeps the lead but the Seat Ateca is up 34 ranks on September to land at a very solid 56th place, while the Audi Q2 gains 35 spots to #130 and the Hyundai Ioniq is up 109 to #159.
