The Turkish new car market is up 6% year-on-year in September to 67.593 registrations, leading to a year-to-date tally down just 4% to 636.499 units. According to our local correspondent Kursat Bahadur this is still a very robust result considering the economical and political troubles the country has had to bear in the past few months. In order to keep the market afloat, the Turkish government has cancelled a tax applying only to commercial vehicles (mainly taxis) which may help close to gap with last year’s record sales. Brand-wise, Volkswagen remains comfortably in the lead with 15.3% share (+6%), while all its direct followers lose ground: Ford at 11.1% (-8%), Fiat at 10.4% (-3%) and Renault at 9.6% (-23%). Below Hyundai in 5th place (+7%), Dacia (+32%), Toyota (+66%), Opel (+37%) and Peugeot (+61%) post the largest gains in the Top 10. Further down, notice Nissan (+26%), Seat (+44%), Skoda (+54%), Land Rover (+69%), Ssangyong (+83%) and Suzuki up 35-fold (!) thanks to the new Vitara (#69).

The Turkish models ranking is the theatre of a very momentous passing of the leadership baton between the Renault Fluence and the Fiat Egea. The Fluence, now discontinued, is down 94% to #82 now that its replacement the Mégane Sedan has arrived in Turkish dealerships with its first 715 sales this month, and drops from #1 to #3 year-to-date with 21.707 sales. The Egea, launched last October to replace the Linea, has never topped the sales charts in Turkey. That was until this month when it sells a whopping 2.907 units for a 4.3% share and is propelled into the year-to-date lead at 24.352 units above the Ford Courier at 23.076. Its predecessor the Fiat Linea ranked in the annual #1 spot in Turkey in 2012 and 2013. Other great performers this month in Turkey include the VW Polo up 176% to #3, the Toyota Corolla up 41% to #6, the Opel Astra up 44% to #8, the Dacia Sandero (+102%), Citroen C-Elysée (+112%), Peugeot 301 (+101%) and Seat Leon (+103%).
