It’s time for September data. The Spanish new car market posts a 7th month of double-digit year-on-year gains out of 8 this year with September sales up 14% to 80.100, the best score for the month since 2007 (96.774), leading to a year-to-date tally up 11% to 879.353 units, the highest since 2008 (948.286). If private sales remain solid at +9% to 47.577 and 59.4% share vs. 52.6% year-to-date, this month the engines of growth are elsewhere: with company sales at +17% to 27.833 and 34.7% share vs 26.6% YTD and more spectacularly sales to rental companies at +60% to 4.690 and 5.9% share, however still way below the 20.8% share it holds so far in 2016.

Volkswagen is the #1 marque in Spain for the 2nd month running, following the market at +15% to 6.899 deliveries and 8.6% share, but Renault progresses much faster at +38% to 6.516 and 8.1%. Market leader so far in 2016, Opel is stable year-on-year, resulting in a much reduced 5.9% share and a paltry 6th place in September. Spectacular gainers this month include Fiat (+35%), Jeep (+44%), Land Rover (+46%), Alfa Romeo (+69%), Jaguar (+86%), Maserati (+100%), Suzuki (+104%), Infiniti (+300%) and Bentley (+400%).

The Peugeot 2008 surges up 38% to 1.461 sales and #8 thanks to its facelift, sandwiched by the 308 (1.570) and 208 (1.444). The Kia Sportage (+41%), Opel Corsa (+42%), Renault Captur (+45%), VW Tiguan (+47%), Hyundai Tucson (+71%) and Ford Kuga (+128%) also impress but the Opel Astra disappoints at a paltry -24%.
