The Indian new car market slows down its growth in June to just +2% to 222.252 ex-factory deliveries, partly due to fire outbreak in one of Maruti’s plants which incurred a 10% year-on-year drop for the market leader to 92.133 sales and a meagre 41.5% share vs. 46.4% year-to-date. Hyundai and Mahindra both improve by 10%, Toyota is up 30%, Tata up 22%, Renault up 173%, Ford up 109% and Datsun up 188% but Honda implodes at -38%.

India 2016 06 A segmentThe Renault Kwid’s impact on Maruti Alto sales is clearcut.

The reason behind Renault’s surge is well-known: after a slump in May, the Kwid is back to its now-legendary glory with 9.450 sales at a best-ever 5th place. The Maruti Alto is clearly hit at -25% to just 15.750 sales, its lowest monthly score in almost four years – since August 2012 when sales were disrupted by labour unrest… The Maruti DZire (-29%), Wagon R (-10%) and Swift (-48%) also struggle, meaning the Hyundai Grand i10 leaps onto the podium for the very first time thanks to deliveries up 41% to 12.678. The Toyota Innova continues on its impressive run with the new Crysta generation at #8 (+97%) while the Hyundai Creta reclaims the title of best-selling SUV in India at 7.700 sales vs. 6.673 for the Maruti Vitara Brezza.

The Tata Tiago improves 6 spots and 28% on its May score to land at #17 with 4.205 sales, the best scores of any Tata nameplate since the Indica/Vista hit #16 and 4.287 units in March 2014Ford is pushed by the Ecosport (+26%) and Aspire (#31) while for recently-resucitated brand Datsun the story is starting to get interesting. The GO, launched in February 2014, peaked at a paltry 2,690 sales in April 2014 while the GO+ was even more of a flop, with a personal best of just 1.563 in April 2015. The RediGO beats them both for its first full month of deliveries, up 30 spots on its inaugural May ranking to #26 with 2.925 sales. Could Datsun have cracked the magic formula with the RediGo, based on the same platform as the Kwid?
