Spain May 2016: Opel cements lead with Corsa best-seller

The Spanish new car market is up a whopping 21% year-on-year in May to 114.441 registrations, the strongest May score in 8 years (116.137 in 2008), lifting the year-to-date total up 12.5% to 502.558 units, the first time Spain is above the half-million mark after five months since 2008 (587.519). A look at sales by channels shows that a large part of these gains are due to sales to rental companies up 38% or almost 10.000 units to 34.111 and 29.8% share (vs. 26.1% a year ago) whereas company sales and private sales are both up 15% but lose market share: 46.2% for private sales vs. 48.7% a year ago.

Brand-wise, Opel reclaims the top spot it also holds year-to-date thanks to sales up a magnificent 36% to 10.563 and 9.2% share above Renault up 37% to 9.948 units and 8.7%. Volkswagen (+1%), Seat (+5%) and Peugeot (+10%) round up the Top 5. Audi (+49%), Kia (+40%), Hyundai (+41%), Mazda (+42%), Jeep (+110%), Lexus (+59%), Suzuki (+72%) and Jaguar (+263%) also frankly outperform the market this month.

Model-wise, the Opel Corsa shoots up 48% year-on-year to take the lead for the first time since June 2014 with 3.671 deliveries, outpacing the Seat Leon (3.511) and Ibiza (3.496) with the Renault Clio up 44% (3.107) and Nissan Qashqai up 39% (2.698) in tow. The Renault Captur is up 69% to #8, the Opel Mokka up 66% to #11 and the Audi A3 up 94% to #13. Among recent launches, the Hyundai Tucson shines once again at #14 with 1.810 sales, miles above the next best-selling newcomers being the Renault Talisman (#84) and Mercedes GLC (#87). Further down, the Seat Ateca is gearing up at #113 (+91 spots on April), the Jaguar F-Pace is up a further 11 ranks to #132 and we welcome the Ford Edge at #175 with 62 units sold in May.
