April sales in Germany are up by a very robust 8% year-on-year to 315.921 units, lifting the year-to-date total up 6% to 1.107.345. As its emissions scandal draws into its 8th month with still a lot of finger pointing happening both internally at Volkswagen and externally in Germany and worldwide and a long way towards a resolution, VW continues to underperform but is in positive at +3% to 64.577 sales and 20.4% share vs. -2% and 20.5% so far in 2016. Mercedes overtakes Audi to rank #2 thanks to volumes up a striking 22% to 30.075, yet Audi also outperforms the market at +10% to 29.770. Fiat is up 19% to claw its way back inside the Top 10, with Toyota (+10%), Kia (+20%), Mini (+25%) and Mazda (+34%) also posting double-digit gains inside the Top 20. Further down and in ranking order, Volvo (+21%), Honda (+90%), Land Rover (+29%), Jaguar (+125% thanks to the F-Pace), Ssangyong (+81%), Infiniti (+181% thanks to the Q30) and Bentley (+98%) also shine.

Model-wise, the VW Golf is once again miles ahead of the competition but dips 1% to 24.927 units, with VW back to monopolising the podium as it did in 2015 and is doing so far in 2016 with the Passat (+2%) and Polo (+22%). The VAG Group even monopolises the Top 5 this month with the Audi A3 at #4 and the Audi A4 boosted 48% by the new model to #5 and 6,345 sales, now leading its segment. The Mercedes C-Class is not hit, and far from its: up 17% to #6, but the BMW 3 Series sinks 9% to #22. Also bolstered by a new generation, the Mercedes E-Class is up 68% to break into the Top 10 at #10 vs. #23 so far this year.

Among recent launches, the Hyundai Tucson leads the way at #37, the Honda HR-V (#106) and Ford Mustang (#108) are just outside the Top 100 and we welcome three new nameplates into the German Top 200 in April: the Infiniti Q30 is up 69 spots on last month to #175 with 241 sales, becoming the brand’s best-seller above the QX70 (#239), the Jaguar F-Pace is up 97 ranks to #179 and 221 units, already getting very close to the brand’s favourite the XF (#171) and outselling the XE (#190) and finally the Suzuki Baleno up 77 notches to #200 and 146 deliveries.
