After losing 16% over the Full Year 2015, the Indonesian new car market is down a further 10% in January to 84.885 registrations. Exactly two years ago, Honda launched the Mobilio MPV. After starting at #18 in January 2014, it went on to hit a record 10% market share in May of that year and 10.592 sales in March, becoming only the 2nd nameplate in Indonesian history to post five digit-monthly sales after the Toyota Avanza. The Mobilio ended 2014 in 2nd place (79.288 units), but dropped to 4th last year (48.927), having ranked #2 in the monthly Indonesian charts for a total of 9 times over the period – 8 in 2014 but just once in 2015. Priced relatively high, the Mobilio has been perceived as premium by Indonesian consumers.

After hitting the mark once again with the HR-V in 2015 (directly #8), Honda really zeroes in on the decade-long leader the Toyota Avanza with the BR-V, a compact SUV larger but priced below the HR-V and based on a Brio platform like the Mobilio. Considered both as an MPV and an SUV in Indonesia, the BR-V looks tough and capable and with the SUV wave currently engulfing everything on its wake it may just be what consumers need right now. The BR-V lands at a stunning 2nd place with 6.627 sales and 7.8% share just as the Avanza takes another hit with sales down 25% to 9.370 despite a facelift less than 6 months ago.

After benefitting from various facelifts over its 12 year-career, the Toyota Kijang Innova finally gave way to an all-new second generation last November, and is boosted accordingly this month with deliveries up 49% year-on-year to 5.825, enabling the nameplate to rank inside the Indonesian podium for the first time since May 2014. Below, the Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (-28%), Toyota Agya (-14%) and Suzuki Carry Pikap (-25%) suffer but the Suzuki Ertiga (+22%) and Daihatsu Ayla (+27%) are in great shape as is the Honda HR-V at #9. The Toyota Fortuner, also helped by a new model, re-enters the Top 20 thanks to deliveries ip 12%.
