For the 5th consecutive year on BSCB we can share now with you the best-sellers in each Australian State/Territory, this time extending the data to the State Top 100 models. This is exclusive data you won’t find anywhere else on the web. Like in 2013 and 2014, despite ranking third nationally the Toyota Hilux is the only nameplate to post three wins (Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory), while the Mazda2 is now the only car winning twice (Victoria and Australian Capital Territory) as the Toyota Corolla, leader in the #1 State New South Wales, loses its throne in Tasmania where the Ford Ranger lodges its first ever win. The Holden Commodore remains #1 ‘at home’ in South Australia, a position it last held nationally in 2010.

New South Wales (Sydney)

New car sales are up 7% year-on-year in NSW, cementing its leading State status at 380.858 registrations. Once almost identical to the national ranking, the NSW model charts differentiate itself this year: below the Toyota Corolla (-3%) and Mazda3 (-7%), the Hyundai i30 overtakes the Toyota Hilux to jump onto the podium while the VW Golf surges 24% to a splendid 5th place vs. #10 nationally. The Mazda CX-5 resists at #8 with the Nissan X-Trail at #12 (+45%) and the Toyota Kluger at #14 (+23%) also lodging excellent results. The Subaru Outback is #20 vs. #27 nationally and the Audi A3 is #42 vs. #57.

Mercedes C Class Australia 2015The Mercedes C-Class hits its highest ranking in Victoria at #15 overall.

Victoria (Melboune)

The Victorian new car market is a little shyer at +4% to 315.389 sales in 2015. The Mazda3 holds onto its pole position, but just: at -12%, its advantage over the Toyota Corolla (-4%) is now only 300 units The Holden Commodore (-11%) drops one spot to #3 just as the Toyota Camry (+33%) gains one to #4. The For Ranger (+18%) overtakes the Toyota Hilux to become the best-selling pickup in the State, with the Mazda CX-5 (+21%) and VW Golf (+14%) also strong. The Nissan X-Trail (+59%) stops 67 units short off a Top 10 ranking while the Mercedes C-Class is up 30% to deliver an outstanding 15th place, its highest ranking anywhere in Australia.

Queensland (Brisbane)

Sales are back in positive in Queensland this year, up a solid 5% to 235.674 units. With no recent history of local automotive manufacturing in the State, pure importers hold a larger share in Queensland: only four nameplates are not Asian in the Top 20. Queensland is more than ever the kingdom of pickup trucks, nicknamed “utes” in Australia (for utility), with 7 placing inside the Top 15 best-sellers overall. The Toyota Hilux remains in the lead despite sales down 7% to 9.244, the Mitsubishi Triton is #5, the Ford Ranger #6, Holden Colorado #8, the Isuzu D-Max delivers its only Top 10 ranking anywhere in Australia at #10 (+18%) with the Mazda BT-50 (#12) and Nissan Navara (#15) completing the picture. Notice also the Mazda CX-5 up 20% to #7 and the Toyota Camry up 34% to #9. The Holden Commodore ranks at a weak 14th place.

Western Australia (Perth)

Hit full frontal by the end of the mining boom, new car sales in Western Australia are down sharply for the second year in a row at -8% to 106.188 units. The Toyota Hilux retains its crown despite freefalling 22% to 4.133 sales. It is followed by the Toyota Corolla (-14%) while the Ford Ranger (-3%) gains two spots on 2014 to land on the third step of the podium. The Toyota Prado (-13%) once again manages an outstanding 6th position overall (vs. #14 nationally), with the Mitsubishi Triton (-6%), Toyota RAV4 (+10%) and Mazda CX-5 (+13%) making their entrance inside the Top 10. The Mitsubishi ASX is up 64% to #19 (+30% nationally) while the all-new Hyundai Tucson ranks #53 vs. #63 nationally.

South Australia (Adelaide)

South Australia is one of only three States to lose ground in 2015 at -0.8% to 69.047 registrations. This is Holden territory: the company started as a saddlery manufacturer here in 1856, and will continue to manufacture cars in Elizabeth, north of Adelaide until 2017. Fittingly, this is the only (last?) State where the legendary Holden Commodore manages to remain in pole position, five years after holding the national top spot for the last time. It sells 2.970 units (-20%), distancing the Toyota Corolla (-7%) and Mazda3 (-14%). The Holden Cruze, also manufactured locally, posts its only Top 10 State ranking in South Australia at #8 (-11%). Mitsubishi, once also manufacturing here, frankly over-performs with the Triton (#6 vs. #8), Outlander (#11 vs. #30), ASX (#12 vs. #22), Lancer (#26 vs. #43) and Pajero (#36 vs. #62) ranking significantly higher in SA than nationally.

Tasmania (Hobart)

After falling 10% in 2014, the Tasmanian new car market bounces back this year at +12% to 19.683 deliveries. As the markets get smaller, the models ranking start to look very different than the national charts. Case in point: the Ford Ranger posts its first ever Australian State win in Tasmania this year thanks to sales up 10% to 754 vs. 690 (+1%) for its archenemy the Toyota Hilux, following a similar pattern as southern neighbour New Zealand. Mitsubishi lodges a stellar year, placing the Triton at #2 (+12%), the ASX at #3 (+74%) and the Outlander at #7 (+49%), all ranking way above their respective national levels. The Toyota Corolla remains the best-selling passenger car in the State but drops from #1 to #4.The Subaru Forester (#11), Hyundai Accent (#17) and Subaru Outback (#18) also shine.

Australian Capital Territory (Canberra)

New car sales in the Australian Capital Territory are up 4% to 18.045 units, and the Mazda3 once again posts its second win here despite sales down 13% to 792. Meanwhile the VW Golf is catching up fast: up 12% to 658 deliveries in 2nd place overall, by far its best ranking anywhere in Australia. The Mitsubishi Triton is up a flamboyant 39% to third place overall, up from #8 in 2014. Other great performers in the Territory include the Honda Jazz up 54% to #9, the Subaru Outback up 7-fold to #11, VW Polo up 28% to #14 and the Honda HR-V landing directly at #15, its best ranking in Australia.

Toyota Land Cruiser Australia 2015Toyota holds almost 40% of the Northern Territory market. The Land Cruiser is #5.

Northern Territory (Darwin)

Although larger than France, Germany and Spain put together, the Northern Territory is home to just 243.700 inhabitants, 60% of them in Darwin. This big expanse of desert saw the registration of 10.524 new vehicles in 2015, down 4% year-on-year and the equivalent of 10 days worth of sales in Sydney. Northern Territory is Toyota Territory: the Japanese manufacturer improves its market share further to 39% here, with the rugged terrain a perfect playground for its 4WD lineup. Toyota monopolies the Top 5 best-sellers and places 8 nameplates inside the Top 10. The Hilux leads the way once again despite sals down 19%, had of the Corolla, Prado, Camry and Land Cruiser, up 4 spots to #5. The Ford Ranger (#6) and Mitsubishi Triton (#9) are isolated in the Top 10 while the Land Cruiser Pickup lodges its only Top 10 ranking in any Australian State/Territory but drops 19% to #10.
