South Korea June 2015: Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento shoot up

Sales of new local vehicles in South Korea are up a cool 12% year-on-year in June to 135.218 registrations, bringing the half-year total to 732.688 units, up 4% on 2014. Hyundai (46.4%) and Kia (33.3%) go on holding the lion’s share of local sales, with the Hyundai Porter back to the pole position it holds year-to-date thanks to sales up 20% year-on-year to 9.957 units. The Hyundai Sonata, #1 in May, is knocked down to 2nd place at 9.604 sales, just above the Hyundai Santa Fe up 16% on June 2014 and 6 spots on last month to #3 and 9.073 deliveries. The Kia Sorento does even better, up 6-fold year-on-year thanks to the new model to 4th place with 7.212 sales. Notice also the Kia Carnival up 49%, Kia Bongo up 31%, Hyundai Tucson up 28% and the Ssangyong Tivoli posting a record monthly volume at 3.630 units in 15th place.

Among foreign manufacturers up a splendid 35% as a whole to an all-time record 24.331 registrations and 15.3% share, BMW is getting dangerously close to the local manufacturers, up a stunning 62% on June 2014 to 5.744 sales, it is now only 1.000 units below Renault Samsung (-21%)… Mercedes and Volkswagen follow, both up 44%, while Audi tumbles down 19% to 2.205 sales above Ford (+95%), Mini (+28%), Lexus (+23%) and Toyota (+28%). The biggest gainers include Peugeot (+268%), Cadillac (+103%) and Land Rover (+77%). Model-wise, the Mercedes E-Class reigns supreme with 1.916 sales (+35%) ahead of the BMW 3 Series (+161%), 5 Series, VW Golf (+125%) and Tiguan (+63%).
