The Swedish new car market posts a 17th consecutive month of year-on-year gains at +6.5% in May to 29.458 registrations, lifting the year-to-date total to 135.727 units, up 10% on 2014. Volvo (19.3%) extends its lead over Volkswagen (14.3%) to five percentage points vs. 4.4 year-to-date, Toyota (-6%) is threatened for third spot by Kia (+9%), Audi (+11%), BMW (+4%) and Skoda, up a gigantic 28% to 1.491 units and 5.1% share. Notice also Ford up 14%, Subaru up 16%, Mercedes up 17%, Seat up 29%, Nissan up 39%, Peugeot up 42% and Mini up 47%. Model-wise, the Volvo V70 falls to 7.4% share, less than one share point above the VW Golf (6.6%) lifted by the station wagon and sportsvan variants. The Volvo XC60 delivers a third ever podium finish at home (along with January 2014 and last month) thanks to an excellent 4.7% share, just as the new generation Volvo XC90 spreads its wings at #26 with 296 units and 1% share. The first generation XC90 landed in November 2002 and reached its annual ranking best in 2003 (#26) with an unofficial monthly ranking record at #14 in January 2007 – a hard target to beat now that the XC60 is capturing the majority of Volvo’s SUV customers.
