Now that the government has decided to extend the scrappage scheme that was originally planned to stop at the end of April, new car sales in Spain are back to double-digit growth: up 15% year-on-year in May to 94.674 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 446,646 units, up 22% on 2014. These are the best scores since 2010 and 2nd best since pre-recession 2008. In the brands ranking, despite sales down 7% on May 2014, Volkswagen reclaims the May and year-to-date pole positions off Seat at 8.110 and 38.698 sales respectively, vs. 7.597 and 38.535 for local manufacturer Seat, down to #3 this month. Opel is up 26% to #2, Renault up 56% to #4 and Nissan up 32% to #8, with other great gainers in May including BMW (+26%), Mazda (+30%), Kia (+38%), Mini (+47%), Volvo (+50%), Land Rover (+67%), Mitsubishi (+135%) and, of course, Jeep (+218%) thanks to the Renegade.

Renault KadjarManufactured in Spain, the Renault Kadjar lands directly at #89 in May.

Model-wise, the Seat Ibiza edges ahead of the Leon this month at 3.078 sales vs. 2.997, slightly extending its lead year-to-date at 16.201 deliveries vs. 15.903. In each case the two Spanish nameplates are the only ones above 3% share in an increasingly fragmented market. In fact, with the Opel Corsa and VW Golf each leaping up two spots on April to #3 and #4 respectively, only 1.099 units separate the #3 year-to-date (VW Golf at 11.211 sales) from the #9 (Renault Clio at 10.112)… Other great May performers include the Peugeot 308 up to #10, the Kia Sportage up to #15, Hyundai i20 up 15 spots to #35, Range Rover Evoque up 35 to #39, Toyota Aygo up 23 to #58, Seat Alhambra up 52 to #79 and the Ford Ecosport up 30 to a record #87. Finally, we welcome 3 new nameplates in the Spanish charts this month: the locally produced Renault Kadjar lands directly inside the Top 100 at #89, the Mazda CX-3 appears at #182 and the Ssangyong Tivoli at #204.
