Complete European sales data in now available for the Full Year 2014. As we have described earlier, the Top 10 brands is unchanged on a year ago, with Renault (+9%) and Opel (+7%) faring the best above Peugeot and Mercedes (+6%). Larger increase can be spotted just outside the Top 10 however: Skoda and Nissan are both up 13% and in the case of the German-Czech manufacturer, an annual Top 10 ranking is in the cards for 2015. Once again, low-cost French-Romanian brand Dacia wins the ‘most improved’ contest in the Top 25 thanks to sales up a very vigorous 25% to 362,520 units, overtaking Kia to rank #15 overall.

Maserati Ghibli Europe 2014Mainly thanks to the Ghibli, Maserati sales are up 268% in Europe in 2014.

Further down, notice the excellent performances of Seat (+14%), Volvo (+10%), Mazda (+18%), Mitsubishi (+24%), Porsche (+22% thanks to the Macan) and, most impressive of all, Jeep up 68% to #29 and 40,453 sales. Tesla improves by 121% over 2013 to reach the 34th place with 8,868 sales while Maserati enjoys the tremendous success of the Ghibli, gaining a huge 268% on 2013 to rank #36 with 5,734 units. Notice also Infiniti and Dodge each up 79%, Great Wall up 73% to a still minuscule 493 sales and Saab back up to #52 thanks to a couple of hundred Swedish sales.

Refined nameplate sales figures mean one change in the 2014 Top 10 models: the Nissan Qashqai reclaims the 8th spot it already held in 2013 with a tiny 87 sale-advantage over the Skoda Octavia, knocked down to #9 which is still the nameplate’s best-ever ranking and its first time in the annual European Top 10. The Audi A3 stays 10th but drops below the 200,000 unit-mark to 199,537. The heroes of the year are small SUV – or more aptly named crossovers: for their first full year of sales the French superstars continue to redefine this segment: the Renault Captur is up 91% to #15 and dipped into the monthly Top 10 twice:  in June when (#7) and December (#9) and the Peugeot 2008 is up 125% to #23 but seems to have plateaued and will struggle to break the Top 10 in this generation’s life. Different story for the Opel Mokka which keeps improving two years after launch: it outsold the Astra for the first time in November, hit a record #14 in December and finishes the year up a beautiful 79% to #29.

The compact car category has also seen some interesting moves this year: the Peugeot 308, boosted by the new generation elected 2014 European Car of the Year, is inside the Top 10 during the last two months of the year and finished 2014 at #16 with sales up 62% to 161,520 units. It should overtake the 208 to become the brand’s best-seller in Europe over the Full Year 2015. A few spots below, not only does Volkswagen signs outstanding performances with the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia, it also does so with the Seat Leon, whose last generation is lifting the nameplate to never-seen before heights: up 57% to #21. Notice also the Dacia Sandero up 14% to #20 and the Mercedes C-Class up 16% to #22 but destined to a much higher FY 2015 ranking.

Dacia Duster Europe 2014. Picture courtesy of largus.frDacia Duster sales are up 46% in Europe in 2014.

Two SUVs lodge their best-ever European annual volume inside the Top 50: the Dacia Duster is up 46% to 127,708 sales and the Ford Kuga makes its first appearance in a year-end Top 50 at #49 thanks to sales up 31%. The VW Golf Sportsvan is the most popular new nameplate on the continent this year, landing at #64 but aiming at the compact MPV category lead for 2015 – currently held by the Citroen C4 Picasso with sales up 36%. The Mercedes GLA (#98), Peugeot 108 (#116), Citroen C4 Cactus (#118) and BMW 2 Series (#122) follow.
