Spain November 2014: Seat Leon #1, now threatens Ibiza YTD

The Spanish new car market is doing very well, thanks for asking. With November sales up 18% year-on-year to 65,458 deliveries, it  celebrates 15 consecutive months of year-on-year gains and equals its YTD growth: +18% on 2013 to 784,004 units. This is the strongest November score since 2009 and the highest YTD tally since 2010. This continued growth was helped this month by the announcement by the government to extend the PIVE subsidy scheme that offers price cuts on new low-emission vehicles. The brands sales charts is a volatile as ever with Renault lodging a 2nd month in a row on top thanks to sales up 42% on November 2013, Opel up 31% to #2, Volkswagen down one spot to #3 but still #1 YTD, Ford up 30% to #4 and Seat up 21% to #5. Notice also Nissan up 36%, Kia up 40%, Lexus up 138%, Smart up 145% and SsangYong up 121%.

In the models ranking, the Seat Leon is the best-selling nameplate at home for only the 4th time ever (the 3rd for this generation) after June 2011, February 2014 and July 2014 thanks to 2,193 sales and 3.4% share. With the Seat Ibiza down to a paltry 10th place this month at just 1,369 units and 2.1%, the Leon is now just 261 sales below the Ibiza with just one month left in 2014! The race to the title of 2014 best-selling car in Spain has never been so tight. Never before has the Leon topped the annual Spanish ranking (or any other country in the world for that matter) whereas the Ibiza has done so 10 times already, including the past 5 consecutive years. So Ibiza or Leon? Answer in one month.

Opel Mokka

After delivering a splendid 1-2 last month, Renault places the same two models on the podium in November: the Clio is #2 again thanks to 1,885 sales and 2.9% while the Mégane is down two spots to a still excellent third place at 2.8%. The Ford Focus is up 6 ranks to #4, the Toyota Auris up a further two to #6, the Opel Astra up 6 to #8, Toyota Yaris up 4 to #13 and Renault Captur solid at #15. Further down, the Opel Mokka is up 11 spots on October to a record #21, the Mercedes GLA up 16 to a best-ever #28, its first time inside the Spanish Top 30 and Mercedes’ most popular model here above the C-Class at #31 (+15) and the A-Class at #34 (+9).

Among recent launches, notice the Nissan Pulsar up 16 spots to #63, the Ford Tourneo Courier up 11 to #73, the Lexus NX 300h up 39 to break into the Spanish Top 100 for its 2nd month of sales at #79, the BMW X4 up a further two ranks to #96, the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer now separated from the 2-Series and landing at #107, the Jeep Renegade up 53 spots to #109 and the new gen Smart Forfour making its first appearance inside the ranking at #113.
