Italy October 2014: Lancia Ypsilon confirms record #2 spot

The Italian new car market is up an encouraging 10% year-on-year in October to a still shy 123,171 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,167,683 units, up 4% on 2013. The Fiat Panda is once again the most popular vehicle in the country thanks to 10,179 sales and 8.3% share, well above its 7.5% YTD level. Whereas the 11 year-old nameplate had never managed to rank higher than #3 before last month, the Lancia Ypsilon hits a 2nd consecutive month at a record 2nd place thanks to 4,961 sales and 4% share, while the Fiat 500L is back up two spots on September to round up the podium at #3 and 3.5%. After peaking at 5.1% share back in August, the free fall resumes for the soon-to-be-discontinued Fiat Punto, reaching its lowest-ever ranking at 3% in October. This is the 4th time this year that the Punto breaks this unenviable record after hitting 3.7% in March, 3.6% in April and 3.2% in May.

Outside the Top 10, the Opel Mokka breaks the 2,000 monthly unit mark for the very first time at 2,211 sales, also hitting a best-ever #12 ranking and record 1.8% market share. The small SUV is the brand’s best-seller in Italy this month above the Corsa at #17. Notice also the Renault Captur back up 23 ranks on September to a record #13, the Dacia Duster up 12 to #15, the Toyota Aygo at #25 vs. #38 YTD, the Renault Twingo at #32, Toyota RAV4 at #34, Citroen C1 up 38 ranks to #44 and the Ford Ecosport breaking into the Italian Top 50 for the first time at #49.
