New car sales in Switzerland are down again at -3% year-on-year in September to 21,878 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 219,136 units, also down 3% on 2013. The Top 4 best-selling models are unchanged on last month and on the year-to-date ranking: the VW Golf unsurprisingly dominates, followed by the Skoda Octavia, VW Polo and Audi A3. The Suzuki Swift is up 10 spots to land at a spectacular 5th place but the big event is just below: after breaking into the Top 10 for the first time in any country in the world last August, the Mercedes GLA goes even further and gains 3 more spots to rank #7 thanks to 301 sales and 1.4%, only 27 units off a Top 5 ranking! Clearly the GLA has hit the absolute core of its target in Switzerland: premium tastes mixed with mountainous landscapes mean a premium compact SUV is just what the Swiss doctor ordered.

Other great performers this month in Switzerland include the Toyota Yaris up 20 ranks to #13, the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross up 24 to #17 and the Jeep Cherokee and Citroen C4 Cactus up to equal #99. All other models shining this month (8) belong to the premium segment – denoting clearly where the Swiss new car market is headed. The BMW 1 Series is up 32 spots on August to #16, the Mercedes C-Class up 32 to #18, Audi A1 up 11 to #19, BMW X1 up 20 to #20, BMW 4 Series at #30 and now above the 5 Series year-to-date at #52. The Porsche Macan is up 32 ranks to a best-ever #37 and is now the brand’s best-seller year-to-date after only 6 months on sale at #94 with 802 units above the 911 at 701 sales and #98. Finally, both the BMW X4 and 2 Series break into the Swiss Top 100 for the first time at #79 and #84 respectively.
