New car sales in Taiwan are up 4% year-on-year in January to 44,301 registrations. If the Toyota Corolla unsurprisingly keeps the lead of the Taiwanese models ranking this month with 4,660 sales and 10.5% share, the rest of the podium is totally unexpected. The Nissan Sentra confirms it is a force to be reckoned with by ranking #2 for the second time in the 3 months it has been in market thanks to 2,289 units and 5.2% but the big event comes next: the local Luxgen U6 Turbo lands directly in third place for its first month of sales at home with 2,237 units and 5% share! This is the highest ever ranking for a Luxgen model in Taiwan (and thus in the world), beating the #5 reached by the Luxgen7 SUV back in October 2010.
Taiwanese website u-car.com.tw however notes that U6 Turbo sales are the result of 2.5 months of orders (they started last November) and may be disrupted by the Lunar New Year celebrations in February. The next few months will tell whether local manufacturer Luxgen finally has a winner at home in the U6 Turbo. In any case, it’s a great month for Luxgen’s new range: the U7 Turbo is up 10 spots on December to #27 at 407 units and the S5 Turbo makes its very first appearance in the Top 50 at #44 with 200 sales, meaning Luxgen is the #4 brand in the country in January with 7% share. Other great performers in January in Taiwan include the Ford Kuga at #15 vs. #39 over the FY2013, the Nissan Rogue up 12 spots on December to #20 vs. #38 in 2013, the Ford Ecosport breaking into the Taiwanese Top 50 for its 2nd month in market at #37 and the Mercedes S-Class at #47.
