Third (and last!) Russian update today, with January figures now available. And it’s an average start of 2014 for new car sales in Russia, down 6% year-on-year to 152,662 registrations. The Lada Granta keeps the lead but is down a dangerous 22% on January 2013 to 8,255 sales and 5.4% share, to be compared with -6% and 4.6% for the Hyundai Solaris once again extremely solid. The Renault Duster manages to climb onto the monthly Russian podium for only the 2nd time ever after last November thanks to 5,590 sales, ahead of the Kia Rio (+12%) and the Lada Kalina, down 29% year-on-year and still struggling to impose the new generation onto Russian consumers.

Further down, the Lada Largus is back up 4 spots on December to #7 and 2.5% share, its best ranking since last October and its strongest market share so far in Russia, the Renault Logan is also back up the sales charts at #9 but down 18% year-on-year. The big event this month is the 10th position of the Nissan Almera. We just discovered today that it ranked #25 in December and #43 over the FY2013, so this is a massive achievement for the ‘low-cost’ previous gen Almera. Nissan has a killer month, with the X-Trail also hitting its best-ever ranking in Russia, up 9 spots on December and 36% year-on-year to #13 with 2,687 sales and 1.8% vs. 1% in 2013.

But wait there’s more: the new generation Skoda Octavia progresses one further rank on last month to break into the Top 15 at #15 thanks to 2,439 units and 1.6%, while the Hyundai ix35 is back up 17 spots to #16 and the Daewoo Gentra lodges its very first Top 20 ranking at #20 with 2,199 sales and 1.4% vs. #72 in 2013. An eventful month in the models sales charts indeed! Brand-wise, Lada continues its decline at -21% year-on-year to 15.5% share, followed by Renault (8.4%), Kia (7.3%), Nissan and Hyundai both at 7.2%. Mitsubishi is up 25% to #9, Mazda up 38% to #15, Mercedes up 42% to #16, BMW up 17% to #17 and Honda up 60% to #19.
