In 2013 the Indian new car market surprisingly halts its explosive growth, down 7% year-on-year to an estimated 2.47 million registrations, still the second best-ever year in the history of automobile in India. Brand-wise, Maruti-Suzuki is more than ever obliterating the competition, with its market share up 3 percentage points on 2012 thanks to stable sales at 1,063,964 and 43.1%. Hyundai limits its fall to 3% and improves to 15.4% share at #2 while Mahindra evolves like the market and jumps onto the podium with 242,405 sales and 9.8% share. Toyota is down 16% but up one spot to #4 while Tata loses more than half its sales year-on-year at -51% to just 142,045 units and 5.8% vs. 10.9% in 2012. Honda is up 47% to #6, Renault up 83% to #9, Audi becomes the first luxury brand to sell more than 10,000 annual units (+11%) and Mercedes is up 26%.

The Maruti Alto is the most popular car in the country for the 9th year in a row, evolving exactly like the market at -7% to 265,777 sales and 10.8% share. The 3 next best-sellers are all Marutis for the 2nd year running, and they all beat their annual volume record this year! The Maruti Swift is up 7% to stop only 743 units off the symbolic 200,000 annual sales barrier at 199,257 and 8.1% share, the Maruti DZire is up a whopping 29% to 198,317 units and 8% share vs. 154,273 and 5.8% in 2012 which was already a record year for the nameplate. In March, the DZire became the third model in the history of automobile in India to sell more than 20,000 monthly units after the Maruti Alto (March 2007) and Swift (February 2012). It also took the lead of the monthly charts for the very first time in May
