Sales of new local cars in South Korea are up 3% year-on-year in July to 124,963 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 799,036 units, down 2% on 2012. The race for the title of best-selling car in South Korea continues and is as tight as ever: if last month the year-to-date ranking had the Kia Morning in pole position followed by the Hyundai Porter and Grandeur, this month the cards are redistributed once again. Thanks to an excellent 8,140 sales and 6.5% share, the Hyundai Grandeur takes the lead both in July and year-to-date at 54,696 units and 6.8%. That’s just 247 units above the Hyundai Porter (#3 this month) and 312 ahead of the Kia Morning, down to #6 in July! It is the 3rd time so far in 2013 and the 6th time in the last 3 years the Grandeur tops the South Korean sales charts after April 2011May 2011February 2012, January and February 2013.

Leader in 2012, the Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra) is back up 4 spots on June to land in 2nd place with 7,874 sales and 6.3% but remains #5 so far in 2013. The Hyundai Sonata is stable at #4 both this month and year-to-date, the Hyundai Santa Fe is down 2 ranks to #5 and we welcome a newcomer in the race for the monthly #1 spot: the Kia K5 is up one full market share percentage point compared to June, going from 5% to 6% thanks to 7,479 sales. This means only 0.5% share separate the #1 from the #7 this month!

Other great performers in South Korea in July include the Hyundai Tucson ix extremely solid at #9 with 4.7% vs. #12 and 3.1% year-to-date thanks to the new version of the model now available, the Kia Carnival up 3 to #10 at 3.4% vs. #14 and 2.5%, the Kia Sorento up 4 ranks to #15 and the Hyundai Maxcruz (aka Santa Fe XL) stable at #23 with 1,610 sales and 1.3%.
