Now that most official sales data is in for the first half of 2013, I can share with you the list of all models that have managed to rank #1 in at least one country over the period. This list is exclusive to BestSellingCarsBlog, you will not find it anywhere else! To refresh your memory you can see the 2012 summary hereNote this is not a reflection of the highest worldwide sales volumes which are the object of another post, only how many times a specific model ranked #1 in any country. If no 2013 ranking is available, the most recent data is used and for only a couple of countries I couldn’t allocate a #1 as information was too scarce.

Fiat 500L World June 2013The Fiat 500L is #1 in Serbia

Toyota places no less than 9 models in pole position in at least one country, compared to 10 in 2012. The next best performing brands are Ford and Hyundai both with 5 models at #1, Fiat with 4 and Chevrolet, Kia and Volkswagen all with 3. Notable new members of the #1 club in 2013 are the Fiat 500L (in Serbia) and Kia Sportage (in Azerbaijan and Bulgaria). The Toyota Hilux is still by far the model to rank #1 in the most amount of countries: an estimated 35, albeit including 24 in Africa where the volumes are very low. Out of the estimated 35 countries where the Hilux is potentially #1, 8 have been confirmed with official data.

Hyundai Accent World June 2013. Picture courtesy of idrive.kzThe Hyundai Accent is #1 in Egypt (old gen), Panama and Ukraine and estimated #1 in Cuba and Mongolia.

The Toyota Corolla is estimated to be #1 in 15 countries, including 4 confirmed, followed by the VW Golf which thanks to its 7th generation is now #1 in 13 countries vs. 10 in 2012, 10 of them confirmed and all in Europe. We then a surprise: the Toyota Prado #1 in 6 countries including 3 confirmed and the Hyundai Accent #1 in 5 countries (3 confirmed as well).

Pyeonghwa Samchunri World 2011The Pyeonghwa Samchunri is estimated to be #1 in North Korea.

There are 3 models managing a #1 spot in 4 countries: the Skoda Octavia, Toyota Camry and Yaris but while the Octavia is confirmed with official data in all 4 countries, only 2 out of 4 are confirmed for the Yaris and for the Camry all 4 countries are BSCB estimates, most of them in Central Asia where official data is unavailable. There are 5 models #1 in 3 countries, 15 #1 in two (including the VW Up!, new at this level) and 29 #1 in just one nation so far in 2013.

Guest post: 5 Reasons why you’ll love a Suzuki Swift

Suzuki Swift

Buying a new car is always a difficult decision. There are so many things to consider, and it can leave you feeling flat and uninspired. Luckily, Suzuki have something for everybody, and the Suzuki Swift ticks all of the boxes.

It’s Attractive

There’s no denying that the Suzuki Swift is a good looking car. Small, sleek and stylish, this is a vehicle that people want to be seen in. Available in a variety of colours, the recent models are sure to turn heads. The interior is equally impressive. It’s not over the top luxurious, but definitely provides for a comfortable ride. You’ll feel right at home behind the wheel of a Suzuki Swift.

It’s Compact

There are so many benefits to having a small car. It drives well, it looks good and ultimately, it’s easy to park. Driving in large towns and cities can be made much more accessible with the Swift. Rather than driving straight past those cosy little parks, the Suzuki Swift will slide right in with ease.

It’s Big Inside

Looks can be deceiving. This is especially so when it comes to the Suzuki Swift. Small and manageable, you may think that the inside is tight and cramped. However, you’ll be surprised to know that this is not the case. The Swift is one of the roomiest small cars, easily comfortable enough for those over six foot. There is ample leg and head space in both the front and rear of the interior, as well as a large amount of space in the boot. This little car packs a whole lot more than it seems.

It’s Reliable

Buying a Suzuki Swift, new or used, ensures you with a reliable car. The Swift will last you many years on the road. As well as this, it is surprisingly cheap to maintain. So you won’t be spending thousands of dollars to keep it in shape or forking out for petrol. The Suzuki Swift is fuel affordable and offers a diesel engine as well.

It’s Great to Drive

Suzuki Swift drivers commonly state that their favourite thing about the car is the way it feels to drive. The Swift offers a light and smooth driving experience, with sharp steering to ensure safety and precision. With a number of engines to choose from, all providing first-class accuracy, the Swift is one of the most driveable small cars around.

All in all, the Suzuki Swift is an impressive car. With so many perks at such an affordable price, it’s perfect for experienced drivers or as a first time car. Driving down the highway in a Swift is both fun and easy. With great driveability, safety, reliability and aesthetics, the Swift is the car for just about anybody.

Egypt going through some very serious trouble at the moment, its new car market is down 42% year-on-year in July to just 9,664 registrations. It’s actually surprising that any cars found a buyer at all in the current context. Going through the models ranking you will notice that models used as taxis and light commercial vehicles have kept their traditional monthly volumes, resulting in a vastly increased market share. Case in point, the Hyundai Verna, adored by taxi companies all along the Nile valley, shoots up to 17.5% share in July thanks to 1,675 sales but remains #2 year-to-date at 10,233 units and 9.1% below the Chevrolet TFT (aka Isuzu D-Max) also up to 11.2% share and 1,086 sales this month and adding up to 10,923 units and 9.7% year-to-date.

Speranza Tiggo Egypt July 2013. Picture courtesy of autocosmos.comThe Speranza Tiggo is inside the Egyptian Top 10 for the first time since December 2011.

The Toyota Hilux is up a shiny 5 spots on June to land on the third spot of the podium with 540 sales and 5.6%, but the performance of the month is delivered by the Peugeot 301, up no less than 19 ranks to #4 at 360 units and 3.7% share, making Egypt the second country in the world so far (both in Africa) where the 301 has managed to break into the monthly Top 5 with Algeria. Speranza (the brand Chinese manufacturer Chery uses in Egypt) has a great month, with the Tiggo up 15 spots to #9 potentially thanks to the facelifted model, its first time in the Top 10 since December 2011, and the A113 (#16) and Envy (#19) both up 6 spots. Other gainers include the Renault Fluence up 104 spots to #20, Peugeot 508 up 42 to #21, Skoda Octavia up 21 to #22, Citroen C-Elysee up 32 to #23 and the Peugeot 208 back in the ranking at #29.

Monaco August 2013: Millions on display – Photo report

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Monaco August 2013Good old me with a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in Monaco – picture by my dear dad.

After Italy yesterday and while we feverishly await for the First Half 2013 sales figures for the Principality, I have the pleasure to share with you today my Photo report of Monaco, or more precisely the “Place du Casino” I had the privilege to visit yesterday, arguably the location with the biggest concentration of prestige and supercars in the world…

Ferrari California Rolls Royce Phantom Monaco August 2013bFerrari California and Rolls-Royce Phantom in Monaco, August 2013.

And in that area I wasn’t disappointed! Still very rare in the sales rankings, two Ferrari F12 Berlinetta were on display only metres from each other, gently accompanied by a Ferrari California and a Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider. And that’s only the ones parked as many more were doing the rounds while my dad and I were busy taking pictures…

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Rolls Royce Corniche Monaco August 2013Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Rolls-Royce Corniche in Monaco, August 2013.

Rolls-Royce is also very well represented, both with current models (Ghost and Phantom) but also older ones: there were two Corniche driving around and showing off while I was there…

Bentley and Casino Monaco August 2013The Casino reflects into the bonnet of a Bentley Continental GTC, Monaco August 2013.

If you are a regular reader of BSCB you will know the love story that exists between the Principality of Monaco and Bentley. If not, one figure is enough to understand this phenomenon: the Bentley Continental is the 9th best-selling model in Monaco in 2012 with 1.9% market share! It’s as if Bentleys are the default car in the place. For lack of imagination, choose a Bentley!

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider Monaco August 2013Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider in Monaco, August 2013. Picture by my dear dad.

BMW Z8 Monaco August 2013bMove along Pierce Brosnan, this BMW Z8 is mine! (I wish) Picture by my dear dad.

I was amazed to see a very rare BMW Z8 discreetly parked, it even looked exactly like the one Pierce Brosnan was driving in the 1999 James Bond movie “The world is not enough”. How I dreamt of that car…

Dacia Sandero Monaco August 2013Wait – is that a Dacia Sandero among all the Bentleys? Yes, Sir! Picture by my dear dad.

A few surprises too, some of which won’t be if you are familiar with the 2012 best-sellers in the Principality: lots and lots of Smart Fortwo, a couple of Renault Twizy, the French completely under-represented apart from a Dacia Sandero looking a little out of place!

After gaining a huge 54% in June 2012, the Emirati new car market is up a further 5% this June to 26,473 units, adding up to 166,290 registrations year-to-date, up 12% on 2012. In the brands sales charts, Toyota is crowned #1 by far with 36,4% of the market followed by Nissan at 18.3% while Hyundai at 7.6% passes Mitsubishi at 5.1% (but #3 year-to-date at 7.6%). Toyota monopolises the Top 5 spots in the models ranking in June: the Hilux is the king of the Emirates this month thanks to 1,497 sales and 5.7% ahead of the Prado (5.3%), Land Cruiser (4.9%), Corolla (4.4%) and Camry (3.8%), these models being the only ones selling over 1,000 units in June…

Toyota Prado UAE June 2013The Toyota Prado is #1 so far in 2013 in the UAE.

However the year-to-date ranking is different as the race to the title of most popular vehicle in the Emirates is extremely tight this year: only 750 units separate the #1 from the #4, with the Toyota Prado surprisingly leading the way for now at 9,494 units, ahead of the Hilux at 9,136, the Corolla at 8,781 and the Land Cruiser at 8,748. As a reminded let’s note the Corolla was #1 in 2011 and the Hilux dominated in 2012. Back to the June ranking where the Nissan Patrol and D22 are kicked down to #6 and #7 even though they deliver performances higher than their year-to-date levels. There are two more Toyotas in the Top 9 (making it 7 in 9): the Land Cruiser Pick-up at #8 and Hiace at #9. Notice also the BMW X5 up to #13 vs. #22 year-to-date and the Jeep Grand Cherokee up to #21 vs. #38.
