Australia is one of 6 new car markets in the Top 20 worldwide biggest markets (but the only mature one!) to break an all-time record over the first 6 months of 2013… At 573,711 units it is up 5% on 2012 and on track for a second consecutive record year. The biggest event over the period is the pole position of the Toyota Corolla: never before had it topped a half-year ranking in Australia! However the race is extremely tight atop the Australian sales charts and the 2013 winner will likely only be decided in December. The Corolla is up 10% thanks to the new hatchback to 20,970 sales and 3.7%, ahead of the Toyota Hilux up 7% to 20,721 and 3.6% and the Mazda3 down 8% to 20,077 and 3.5%.

Toyota Corolla Australia June 2013The Toyota Corolla leads the way at half-year for the first time ever.

Below the Hyundai i30 up 2 spots and 7% year-on-year to a best-ever #4 at 14,982 units and 2.6%, we can see the first big megatrend at play in Australia: utes (pick-up trucks) are on fire! The Nissan Navara is up 2 ranks and 4% to #5 with 13,723 sales, the Mitsubishi Triton is up 4 spots and 35% to #6, the Ford Ranger up 11 ranks and 50% to #9 and the Holden Colorado up 14 spots and 43% to #16.

Nissan Pulsar Australia June 2013bThe Nissan Pulsar is the most popular all-new model at #17.

Second big trend: SUVs, especially the compact and small ones, are also getting a big boost. The Mazda CX-5 leads the way, up 54% to #12, followed by the Hyundai ix35 up 66% to #13. Notice also the Nissan Dualis up 22% to #21, Honda CR-V up 1398% to #23 and Holden Captiva7 up 35% to #27. The Nissan Pulsar is the most popular all-new model, landing at #17 with 8,021 sales, ahead of the Mitsubishi Mirage at #34 and 5,535 units.
