Now that the worldwide best-sellers are available, I thought it would be a good idea to look at the detail by segment, so that you don’t have to go through a 500-strong ranking table every time. Let’s start with City cars. Segmenting the market is always a perilous exercise but for this segment I have included the city cars popular in Europe (notably in Denmark) as well as the Kei cars from Japan. At this little game, the Suzuki Alto wins by a thin margin, keeping in mind its sales span two generations: the previous one popular in India and the current one (aka A-Star or Celerio) available worldwide. With 414,409 sales, it is only 3,000 units above the #2 in the category: the Chevrolet Spark/Matiz at 411,753. Here too this figure includes the two generations that are still available alongside each other. Chevrolet Spark World 2012Chevrolet Spark

The Iranian Saipa Pride, derived from the 1980s Kia Rio and only available in Iran, rounds up the podium at 343,508 units, followed by the Suzuki Wagon R at 330,524, the Fiat Uno tailored to South American markets at 262,452 and the Fiat 500 at 232,907. Yes, very different price ranges here but I have decided to classify worldwide sales by size/format rather than price. The Kia Picanto ranks 7th, ahead of the Honda NBOX and Hyundai i10. The Mini rounds up the Top 10 and interestingly sells significantly more than the Audi A1 (which I have classified as a Small car) at 199,276 vs. 111,837.

This category has seen a lot of activity in Europe over the last few years, but given the models launched are restricted to this continent, they are not that high in a worldwide ranking. The VW Up! lands at #16 with 119,620 sales, the Renault Twingo is #19, the Toyota Aygo #27, Peugeot 107 #28, Citroen C1 #30 and Skoda Citigo #53. Notice also the Tata Nano at #26, Suzuki Big Dipper (a restyled Wagon R for China) at #29, the ChangAn Benben Mini at #31 and the BYD F0 at #43.
